I absolutely hate the term 'fedizens' and will never use it. I have seen people using 'mastonauts' for Mastodon users but also feel equally cringed by it. I was checking in on Nostr and they are calling their users 'nostriches' which is also awful. Bluesky people keep using 'skeeters' as a term for users there. I see we have some innate need to come up with these terms but can we try to be a bit more creative or something?

@liaizon "Mastertooters"? No, no that's not right. ๐Ÿ˜ธ

@liaizon I dunno. Creative like what? I think this is creative enough to be recognizable and understandable, which is sufficient for language.

Sure, you can name a fediverse citizen a snorpflorp or something... But it'll probably only make sense to you.

@drq I mean me complaining about it is surely not going to change anyone's behavior but that doesn't mean I have to accept it. I have also seen people try to change habits around calling people using computer stuff users but that hasn't seemed to work so well. I see we do need some agreement on terms for the users of each piece of software but I just wish there was a better way of doing it then making these awkward sandwiches of sounds squished together.

@liaizon I've been working with language through my whole academia, and trust me - there are a lot of instances where I'd prefer we had have been less, ahem, creative.

This post was not an opportunity to respond with more awful name suggestions ugh how about we just give up on language all together. If you want to come up with name suggestions in the replies atleast try a bit harder then just concatenating some words together.

wow this article about the conjugation of posting terms for Mastodon, Bluesky and Twitter is impressively relevant euroblog.jonworth.eu/to-tweet-

@liaizon hahaha, the German part is quite funny. I had no idea the terms got localized to this extent. :D

@mariusor it gets even crazier when you get into non Latin based languages like Chinese and Arabic

@liaizon I remember the way tumblr had its own, not quite grammar, but like written dialect that was entirely lower case and keyboard smashes. Language is wild.

@liaizon
The BlueSky thing looks as if itโ€™s just lame and cringey but in fact itโ€™s a sex joke: to skeet is to ejaculate. So itโ€™s gross as well.

wakest โ‚

@negative12dollarbill If you have spent any time there you will see there is actively thousands of people using the term skeet to refer to their posts. Really strange why we humans want to do this

@liaizon
Yes I have accounts on BlueSky and know itโ€™s commonly used. But I feel most of the people using it donโ€™t know the sex thing and the ones who do are mocking them.
