Since I'm seeing a new wave of people saying they plan to leave Twitter, you may like my browser tool that takes the zip file of your Twitter export and returns a zip file of a web site that lets people browse and search your tweets. You can just upload the files wherever you normally host html and it'll work just fine.

@darius do you know of anything similar for a reddit archive?

Grey Matter

@argentcorvid

fair warning, i am not positive how the sqlite solution will or won't be affected when the new api changes go into effect tomorrow. if you have the technical knowledge and time then i would recommend trying asap. never did it but feel free to reach out with questions. cheers!

@darius
It would appear Elon is once again burning his money.

@darius When I left Twitter, I had nothing but the shirt on my back and the shoes on my feet. I proceeded to build an empire...๐Ÿ˜Ž

Wiredfire :BA:

@darius that's damned cool. I mostly stepped away from Twitter a while back but even so this looks useful to me

Matt Mascarenhas

@darius Brilliant! Thanks for making this, Darius (and to @cblgh for boosting it into my view).

It was actually quite a handy prompt for me to think about where I'd like to host my thing, and a breeze to go ahead and do it at archive.miblo.net/twitter/

Gene Cowan ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@darius freakinโ€™ fantasticโ€ฆ but my Twitter archive is around 60gb. Any way to run this tool locally?

Darius Kazemi

@genecowan it's local. There's no upload. If you read the page it explains this

Gene Cowan ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@darius Ah, I misread it. So, still, I guess Iโ€™m out of luck thanks to the limitations. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Jez ๐Ÿž๐ŸŒน

@genecowan @darius is the source available? might it be possible to make a version that runs on the commandline to overcome these limitations if someone had time and energy to contribute?

Ed Summers

@petrichor it is client side javascript, I don't know if there are limitations. The link to the static site source is at the top of the page: github.com/dariusk/twitter-arc

Jez ๐Ÿž๐ŸŒน

@edsu ah, thanks, I missed that. yes, there are browser imposed limitations on the size of archive it can process

Jez ๐Ÿž๐ŸŒน

@edsu from further down the page:

> "This varies by browser, but if your zip file is over 2GB it might not work."

Ed Summers

@petrichor oh, right. I wonder if running it in Node will help.

Kevin Russell

@darius

This would be more useful if it were all deployed locally. Can we do that? Store the fole locally, use non connected tools?

Darius Kazemi

@kevinrns I don't understand what you mean. The tool runs fully locally in your browser, and if you want you can just access the files locally too

BenMonreal

@darius Thank you so much, I ran a monthslong Twitter educational event pre-Musk and have been looking for something like this to get the tweet archives accessible again.

Chorist

@darius now if I could just get Twitter to *give* me my zipped archive, Iโ€™d be all setโ€ฆ

Rich Felker

@darius I wish we had a way to do this with threaded replies intact linked in from mutuals or others who consent to it.

Darius Kazemi

@dalias ok hear me out... what if there was a web but it was, you know ... semantic

@darius
If they are 'planning', they'll stay.

You need no planning to leave twitter.
You just up and go.
You can go back to collect your belongings, like you explained, but you can just leave.
Leave now.
Not next week, perhaps, or some other time I feel like I want to be a responsible human.
You either see the shitshow twitter is and who's benefiting from it, and you find that repulsive and leave, or you're making pale excuses for not really giving a fuck about anything other than the precious number of followers and tweets and oh woe me I have to find all these good people again in another place.
These are shit excuses and people using them shit me to tears.
And that includes some people I hold in high regard, including Ketan Joshi and Van Badham for example.
Leave the fucking twitter you drongoes!

@PetraPanda @darius

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free

Ed Summers

@hugovk damn, I think that will negatively impact @internetarchive archiving of public Twitter? I wonder if it breaks embedded content too? I could see how this could be the last straw for some journalists.

Megan Fox

@darius Oh, thanks a ton! I managed to get this to work on my, uh, 12gb (WHEN ZIPPED) Twitter archive :D

Removing the media and putting it back after worked just fine, yay!

jrm4

@darius

Are you aware of any current mass deletion tools that are relatively inexpensive or free that allow some selectivity?

David Wertheimer

@darius quick public tech support requestโ€”how do you tweak the code so the default view is the list of tweets rather than the search? So excited to post mine!

Joe Fabisevich :verified:

@darius Do you know of a good version of this for Mastodon posts, or a way to fit posts from my Mastodon archive into this format so I can host both in one giant searchable archive?

Karl Morant ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ :mstdn: ๐Ÿ––

@darius

People really need to just abandon twitter.

Stay on twitter only enables fascists, bigots, racists, and assholes.

Delete twitter and never look back.
