@Mastodon

Great news. If Mastodon is to appeal to a wider audience, grow and hit 2 billion posts/month these features are necessary.

Pinko Palest

@Mastodon@mastodon.social is Eugen a CEO? And is he going to start acting like one?

Asahi 95 :verifiedbi:

@Mastodon Quote posts is the feature I'm really excited about :ms_grinning:

Mary_X

@Mastodon also, could you please add the option to follow someone from one of their posts? I mean, without having to open their profile... Thanks!!!😊

SLCW💥

@Mastodon Rather than have a single provider as the default, might it not make more sense to have the "default" enrollment process automatically pick a random provider from a pre-defined list of reputable servers?

Claudius

@Mastodon
Doubling own on that default server is not what I expected :-(

Philiabot

@Mastodon did you bring quote posts for @darth because that’s awesome!

@Mastodon A few months ago, at your request, many people here exchanged views on the pros and cons of QT in a very long thread. I was there. The exchange was clear in the matter and very polite. There were a great many people against QT.

It is disconcerting when this post then says "we" asked for it. Some people here certainly asked for it. Some. Not all. Not "we".

@Mastodon Will users be able to opt out of search, so that they can choose to make individual posts searchable with hashtags? I was quite enjoying having a lower profile here than on the other platforms.

Quokka

@Mastodon Man I hope there's tooter/instance level options to turn off Quote Tooting. Otherwise it's going to be a mess

CheapPontoon

@Mastodon
OK great.
How about a feed broader than Home so I can see all the toots Favourited by those I follow? ("build-your-own-algorithm")

Lee Thumwood :mastodon:

@Mastodon Awesome. DMs and then it's awesome. Would be good to have something similar to Nostr re Lightning payments etc also.

Simon Forgues

@Mastodon How funny. The same ones who complain about how toxic Twitter is (or was) and come to pollute this post because they don't like the changes. Ironic. 😏

Manuel Quiñones

@Mastodon thanks for making a better onboarding experience! it was a pain to pass through the "select instance" process even as a techy person.

ProtectiveHen

@Mastodon This is great news for those seeking to replicate the experience of #BlackTwitter here, and to better position the #Fediverse to offer a decent experience to non-techies that has NO #surveillance #surveillancecapitalism and no #Ads. As long as it can be done in a way that protects this decentralized system from #VCTakeover, spam and disinfo.

Wladimir Mufty

@Mastodon want to enhance the onboarding process with single sign-on (SAML) and offer multiple accounts and group management?! Take a look at github.com/SURFnet/slurf

We use this solution for a Mastodon instance for Dutch students, researchers and staff from multiple institutions.

They can use their existing edu credentials to register and logon to Mastodon and focus on exploring and getting to know Mastodon and the Fediverse!

@Mastodon I thought, @Gargron once made a point that quoted posts and content search could result into harassment and bully because people tend to "perform to there followers how clever they are" instead of comment directly when facing different ideas. I was persuaded. And now you want it for what? Imitating twitter?

@Mastodon

Would it be at all possible to ask for a simple UI/UX change and get an actual different color on the Boost icon, rather than the too-subtle-by-half 60% gray to 50% gray change it is now?

Like, maybe, the Bookmark or the Favourite icons change colors?

Or would that be too controversial?

@Mastodon I hope that the those tools have robust personal controls so that people can protect themselves, their privacy and customize their experience.

Mastodon's chief strength for quality of life is the battery of mute, blocking and follower controls.

:freedo: :supertuxkart:

@Mastodon Took you guys long enough... Misskey already have this feature since long time ago.....

Der Zahlenchlaus

@Mastodon Mastodon was the only social network i ever used. It seem like the journey is over after less than a year. With this 'features', you make mastodon a twitter clone.

Jesper Musaeus

@Mastodon
@anderspuck får tilsyneladende snart sit ønske om quote posts opfyldt :-)

@Mastodon I'm optimistic that quote posting will at least be better here than on twitter due to moderation. I'm not in favor but I understand why people are. Hopefully it's good.

That said, I feel like there could be a better way than this form of centralization. Being able to choose a community is the best aspect of Mastodon and this obstructs that.

I forget who said it in the replies but maybe having a questionnaire suggest a server based on interests or something would be better.

Maddie ♾️

@Mastodon It's not unusual for a platform to ask people what they're interested in during the sign up process so I think this could potentially be a means of offering the choice that comes with a decentralized social media protocol while also going about it in a familiar way.

taketwo

@Mastodon
My feed reader can't find an rss or atom feed for the blog, does one exist?

Philipp Steinkrüger

@taketwo Bottom right corner of the blog page is the RSS icon.

@Mastodon Thanks for updates! I'm looking forward to groups, as groups could unlock massive new usage-scenarios ( e.g. schools could setup a group per class / course ..)

@Mastodon

This is the first Mastodon announcement written in the too-well-known style of corporate newspeak where every single word is polished in hours of conference calls with PR experts, yet completely fails at hiding or explaining all the obvious contradictions 🤩
Francis Augusto 🇳🇴/🇧🇷/:bahia:

@Mastodon I believe that there are SO many other things development should focus on before quoted posts:

- better following/liking/boosting interface for remote instances (copy and pasting url's is by no means friendly)
- moving posts between instances when transfering accounts
- ability to change domains (tough one)

Post quoting does help to dogpiling, though I believe that dogpillers will be dogpillers.

And putting mastodon.social as default sends a wrong, oh so wrong, message.

Santiago Lema :amiga:

@francis @Mastodon speaking of easier following: not sure how @ivory managed to do this but when I am on a mastodon.social web link I have an ivory banner that makes to such profile ?

Francis Augusto 🇳🇴/🇧🇷/:bahia:

@santiago @Mastodon @ivory they added a smart app banner to the website. I think all instances can do it, but not so sure.

Santiago Lema :amiga:

@francis @Mastodon @ivory Sure any website can do this. So there was some arrangement between mastodon.social and ivory devs ? Hadn’t heard of it. I’d understand it if there was a banner for the “official” app.

Santiago Lema :amiga:

@francis @Mastodon @ivory That’s one sad thing about Mastodon. This is so essential and yet somehow isn’t top priority.

It would literally take one minute for @Gargron to say “Hey mastodon://@user@instance links are the standard, please handle these in your apps” and websites and apps all over would start using this in a week or so. Onboarding would be so much easier.

Santiago Lema :amiga:

@francis @Mastodon @ivory @Gargron This was by far the biggest annoyance when I decided to move here for good last year. Somehow people normalized having to copy and paste a URL into a search field to follow a user.

Worst part is that after a while you forget because once you use onky Mastodon it isn’t an issue anymore. You find people directly from your feeds. But it’s terrible from the web.

@Mastodon
I'm happy you folks are actively developing Mastodon. Curious to see how it pans out, in what ways it's going to be configurable, and how apps are going to adopt it.

@Mastodon Good news. Especially search will be a great feature to find content without settled hashtags, like current events and news.

@Mastodon Cool. Could we also get a darker darkmode? Or at least adjustable one.

Have light sensitivity right now and the darkmode is almost too bright to use.

@Mastodon All this posts from a few months back explaining to folks coming over from Twitter how they have to adapt to Mastodon's way of doing things and accept that things are the way they are for very good and solid reasons - they're gonna look incredibly funny now ;-)

Dee Toher

@Mastodon I'm concerned that having a default server to join could lead to major moderation issues on that server (with lots of new folks not really understanding the norms).
Perhaps a "join a random server in x language" option would be a better default setting to spread the load?

The changing servers process needs improvement - making it so that you can move both your follows and followers at once "by default" would help.

*More needs to be made of server choice = moderation policy choice.*

@Mastodon quoting posts is huge - looking forward to it 💚

@Mastodon

Below paragraph is a paradox and probably even gaslighting. What you actually say is: Let's offer centralization to showcase decentralization. This can only be a valid option when on mastodon.social migration is advertised and migration includes posts.

That said, I'm really looking forward to quote posts and groups!

"Decentralization is a big part of Mastodon’s DNA and is at the forefront of our mission. You may be asking, how a default server option furthers decentralization. We believe it’s important for Mastodon to be good as a product on its own merits, and not just because of its ideology. If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder. Making the onboarding process as easy as possible helps new users get past the sign-up process and more quickly engage with others. This gives us a far better chance of showcasing what decentralized social networks have to offer instead of having that person bounce and never hearing from them again."

@Mastodon Can somebody help me get a handle on what "groups" will be?

JC Palmer

@BrideOfLinux@mastodon.opencloud.lu Maybe something like Telegram groups or Matrix rooms? Just without the encryption, I'd assume.

@Mastodon damn, looks like it’s time to relocate once again…

@Mastodon For people who are afraid that quoted posts wouldn't be something you can't opt-out of, @Gargron said in this post (mastodon.social/@Gargron/10962) that "If we did do it we'd like to make it something you can opt out of …".

Although I personally prefer opt-in, I think this is also fine, especially considering new users wouldn't find this opt-in toggle so easily in the settings (except when asked during onboarding - what I don't think will happen).

Opt-out means there are two user options to implement:

1. Opt-out default for all posts (under Posting defaults)
2. Opt-out for single posts (below the compose window)

Actually these are the same options as the 'Posting privacy', that you can also set as a posting default or only for single posts.

❗ Another important thing to consider is an option for server administrators to reverse the opt-out. This is especially important for existing communities, who want to keep the old behaviour, but still give their users the option to opt-in.

just read the instructions

@joenepraat @Mastodon @gargron

Opt Out is unacceptable, as it completely changes someone's exposure to abuse.

The change has to be Opt In, it has to be per post, and the option has to be revocable, to prevent abusers pile ons.

joene 🏴🍉🌲

@dgold I'm not going to start this discussion again. Opt-out is already better than that social network we want to forget. But having the option for server admins to make it opt-in is something I prefer, comparable with how search-engine indexing can be changed to opt-in on server level. I really hope that @Gargron gives us, long time Mastodon users, this option. Than (mostly) everyone can be satisfied and we can move on.

Amhin

@Mastodon You guys are doing a good work, love the interface, but try to fix the automatic scrolling on the federated feed, because when someone wants it to stop so they can read through what people are posting on the platform, it doesnt stop, just keeps moving.

@Mastodon Throwing in my thank you! Can’t wait! 🥹

Working Class Games

@Mastodon I didn't ask for it and I thought we were against quote toots because it was bad for twitter drive-by type of conversations... And search will be opt-in of course, not opt-out? Every measure is checked against the effects on oppressed groups?

Oh and a default server, how... corporate. This is why mastodon needs a better social structure behind it for decisions, not just website boy n friends.

Charles Gaba

@Mastodon Fantastic news, but when I go to joinmastodon.org and click "Create Account" it still takes me to a long list of servers. Is the change just that mastodon.social is the first one listed?

If that's it, I suspect most people will still be confused. I figured "Create Account" would immediately ask you for a Username/Password but also have a "choose another server" option as well. Or has the change not gone live yet?

Scott Duensing

@Mastodon I absolutely despise corpspeak. I mean, the title of the blog post says "Onboarding" and then you explain it means "signing up" in the first paragraph. Just say "easier to sign up"!

DELETED

@Mastodon I’d love it if you worked on improving your mobile app, too. It’s often my only option for staying active.

tapafon

@Mastodon Why you promoting your own server over others? That, of course, makes registration easier for newbies, but kills whole purpose of Mastodon as decentralised network!

Sye

@Mastodon good. Said long time they there should be a default for people w who don't care.

Daniel Gibson

@Mastodon
The onboarding changes can probably help, but it would be better if it was less painful to move to a different instance later, specifically, if it were possible to migrate your posts.
Without that feature you have a pretty strong lock-in effect especially for users who already have posted a lot and don't want to lose those posts, and with a default instance this results in centralization..

Shanie

@Mastodon I'm hoping to see more work on comment trees from federated instances and loading profiles/posts from federated instances coming in more gracefully.
github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

Quote posts are another great way to carry away discussion from the Fediverse, so to not work on the bigger problem just exacerbates it.

Kajleers ✅

@Mastodon So, how are those quote posts coming along? :)

rival

@Mastodon Hi, thanks for the news and the work and sorry to bother: wasn't quote posts' absence an intentional feature not a bug?, I have kind of a recollection in that sense... Thanks a lot.

ayo

@Mastodon Almost forgot, “groups” was also mentioned in this announcement :) mastodon.social/@Mastodon/1102

RedStrider

@Mastodon For all those against quote posts:

Quote posts already exist, they're called screenshots and links. If people were going to harass others with quote posts, then they already are now.
However screenshots are prone to being doctored, and links are horrible for accessibility. Generally both are a dumb idea when the Fediverse is kinda made for this.

Quote posts can only be an upgrade, bringing Mastodon up to the other Fediverse apps
