I was there. The exchange was clear in the matter and very polite. There were a great many people against QT. It is disconcerting when this post then says "we" asked for it. Some people here certainly asked for it. Some. Not all. Not "we". @Mastodon Will users be able to opt out of search, so that they can choose to make individual posts searchable with hashtags? I was quite enjoying having a lower profile here than on the other platforms. @Mastodon @Mastodon Awesome. DMs and then it's awesome. Would be good to have something similar to Nostr re Lightning payments etc also. @Mastodon How funny. The same ones who complain about how toxic Twitter is (or was) and come to pollute this post because they don't like the changes. Ironic. 😏 @Mastodon thanks for making a better onboarding experience! it was a pain to pass through the "select instance" process even as a techy person. @Mastodon This is great news for those seeking to replicate the experience of #BlackTwitter here, and to better position the #Fediverse to offer a decent experience to non-techies that has NO #surveillance #surveillancecapitalism and no #Ads. As long as it can be done in a way that protects this decentralized system from #VCTakeover, spam and disinfo. @Mastodon want to enhance the onboarding process with single sign-on (SAML) and offer multiple accounts and group management?! Take a look at https://github.com/SURFnet/slurf We use this solution for a Mastodon instance for Dutch students, researchers and staff from multiple institutions. They can use their existing edu credentials to register and logon to Mastodon and focus on exploring and getting to know Mastodon and the Fediverse! https:/social.edu.nl @Mastodon I thought, @Gargron once made a point that quoted posts and content search could result into harassment and bully because people tend to "perform to there followers how clever they are" instead of comment directly when facing different ideas. I was persuaded. And now you want it for what? Imitating twitter? Would it be at all possible to ask for a simple UI/UX change and get an actual different color on the Boost icon, rather than the too-subtle-by-half 60% gray to 50% gray change it is now? Like, maybe, the Bookmark or the Favourite icons change colors? Or would that be too controversial? [Brave web browser tab on Ubuntu LInux] @Mastodon Took you guys long enough... Misskey already have this feature since long time ago..... @Mastodon Mastodon was the only social network i ever used. It seem like the journey is over after less than a year. With this 'features', you make mastodon a twitter clone. @Mastodon @Mastodon I'm optimistic that quote posting will at least be better here than on twitter due to moderation. I'm not in favor but I understand why people are. Hopefully it's good. That said, I feel like there could be a better way than this form of centralization. Being able to choose a community is the best aspect of Mastodon and this obstructs that. I forget who said it in the replies but maybe having a questionnaire suggest a server based on interests or something would be better. @Mastodon
This is the first Mastodon announcement written in the too-well-known style of corporate newspeak where every single word is polished in hours of conference calls with PR experts, yet completely fails at hiding or explaining all the obvious contradictions 🤩 @francis @Mastodon @ivory That’s one sad thing about Mastodon. This is so essential and yet somehow isn’t top priority. It would literally take one minute for @Gargron to say “Hey mastodon://@user@instance links are the standard, please handle these in your apps” and websites and apps all over would start using this in a week or so. Onboarding would be so much easier. @francis @Mastodon @ivory @Gargron This was by far the biggest annoyance when I decided to move here for good last year. Somehow people normalized having to copy and paste a URL into a search field to follow a user. Worst part is that after a while you forget because once you use onky Mastodon it isn’t an issue anymore. You find people directly from your feeds. But it’s terrible from the web. This is the end, beautiful friend The end Can you picture what will be?
[DATA EXPUNGED]
@Mastodon Good news. Especially search will be a great feature to find content without settled hashtags, like current events and news. @Mastodon Cool. Could we also get a darker darkmode? Or at least adjustable one. Have light sensitivity right now and the darkmode is almost too bright to use. @Mastodon All this posts from a few months back explaining to folks coming over from Twitter how they have to adapt to Mastodon's way of doing things and accept that things are the way they are for very good and solid reasons - they're gonna look incredibly funny now ;-) @BrideOfLinux@mastodon.opencloud.lu Maybe something like Telegram groups or Matrix rooms? Just without the encryption, I'd assume. @joenepraat @Mastodon @gargron Opt Out is unacceptable, as it completely changes someone's exposure to abuse. The change has to be Opt In, it has to be per post, and the option has to be revocable, to prevent abusers pile ons. @dgold I'm not going to start this discussion again. Opt-out is already better than that social network we want to forget. But having the option for server admins to make it opt-in is something I prefer, comparable with how search-engine indexing can be changed to opt-in on server level. I really hope that @Gargron gives us, long time Mastodon users, this option. Than (mostly) everyone can be satisfied and we can move on. @Mastodon I didn't ask for it and I thought we were against quote toots because it was bad for twitter drive-by type of conversations... And search will be opt-in of course, not opt-out? Every measure is checked against the effects on oppressed groups? Oh and a default server, how... corporate. This is why mastodon needs a better social structure behind it for decisions, not just website boy n friends. @Mastodon Fantastic news, but when I go to joinmastodon.org and click "Create Account" it still takes me to a long list of servers. Is the change just that mastodon.social is the first one listed? If that's it, I suspect most people will still be confused. I figured "Create Account" would immediately ask you for a Username/Password but also have a "choose another server" option as well. Or has the change not gone live yet? @Mastodon I absolutely despise corpspeak. I mean, the title of the blog post says "Onboarding" and then you explain it means "signing up" in the first paragraph. Just say "easier to sign up"! @Mastodon @Mastodon I'm hoping to see more work on comment trees from federated instances and loading profiles/posts from federated instances coming in more gracefully. Quote posts are another great way to carry away discussion from the Fediverse, so to not work on the bigger problem just exacerbates it. @Mastodon We encourage making it easier for newcomers by adding to May 1 "new onboarding" blog post a link to the default sign-up spot. Thanks. : ) @Mastodon Almost forgot, “groups” was also mentioned in this announcement :) https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/110294411952997299 @Mastodon For all those against quote posts: Quote posts already exist, they're called screenshots and links. If people were going to harass others with quote posts, then they already are now. Quote posts can only be an upgrade, bringing Mastodon up to the other Fediverse apps |
@Mastodon
Great news. If Mastodon is to appeal to a wider audience, grow and hit 2 billion posts/month these features are necessary.
