I'm pretty sure Mastodon is the first social network I've been on that didn't immediately ask me to betray all of the people in my address book.

@briankrebs I kind of like that mastodon doesnโt โcrowdfundโ all your contacts. It leaves room to make new ones. I find Mastodon is like meandering down a river and encountering strangers along the way that share their interests and who point you toward new pathways to explore. Enjoy the journey! @briankrebs This was the moment I quit using the twitter app. All of the notifications were just it asking me to share my entire contacts list. @briankrebs I agree i registered my second account on Twitter without noticed they suspended the account without any reason. I'm really sure this is annoying.. @briankrebs @briankrebs And it's also a fun thing when an app just plainly refuses to start when you don't allow the permissions it wants. That's why I loved PrivacyGuard for CyanogenMod (also loved my Motorola Milestone 2), it gave a third option: give access to a fake resource: empty contact list, a dummy location, etc. I miss that. @briankrebs When I told IT Security at my previous company that LinkedIn was requesting access to my Windows email account, and we should probably not permit that they were "nah, they just want your contacts." (Which the company should not want them to have, let alone credentials to a bunch of email accounts!) @briankrebs @briankrebs Or like TikTok, betraying people who betrayed their contacts by showing you which users have you in their contacts (I think this has been fixed, though). The Fediverse is so refreshing. @briankrebs Betray all of the people in your address book. :vlpn_scream: (This is a joke) @briankrebs it is refreshing. snap chat begs me for access once a month. Joke is I dont have any contacts on my iphone and it still pulls people that message me on google voice as suggestions Tired: App demands access to all of your contacts upon account creation. Wired: App demands near total access to your other social media apps, contacts, posts, timeline, likes, friends, settings, blah blah. @briankrebs donโt forget health data and motion tracking! @briankrebs Please enter your DOB and give access to precise location. And image of government photo ID. @briankrebs actually tiktok have a pre upload policy if you allow access to photo or video it will upload everything just in case you want to share it @briankrebs Tired - appropriate name for an app that will make you feel exactly like this when being forced to betray your contacts yet again. @wdormann The whole experience I documented was done in a virtual machine and VPN. I wouldn't put either of those apps on my phone if you paid me. I was on some social network before 2005 and they didn't ask that. But they also was on invite only, not searching for business money @Cliftographer @briankrebs Me either. I don't remember Nostr asking either. #FaceBook won't let me change my password for #Instagram so I haven't tried #Threads. @briankrebs Open source innit. If you feel that feature is missing I'm sure you're welcome to code it. |
@briankrebs "betray" is ๐ โ thank you
