An important point people pushing VR seem to forget is that every gadget competes for attention with all the rest.

Pulling out your phone and using a social media app to pass time is easier than putting on a VR headset. In order for people to choose the latter, it has to be that much more compelling.

I think this is the precise reason Meta was dead on arrival. It simply doesn't offer anything compelling enough to warrant the effort of putting a headset on for.

@yogthos VR is to social media like LSD to cigarettes.
You don't need to stop other things to smoke a cigarette.

@yogthos It seems like the low-hanging-fruit for VR is just to give me a huge work area with app windows all around me instead of a monitor, and maybe throw a nice animated 3d beach or space background behind it. And a huge screen for watching tv.

@richard_merren my experience with current gen vr is that the resolution is too low, and the headset is not comfortable enough to wear for a prolonged period of time. You can use it for a couple of hours tops before it becomes exhausting.

This tech is going to have to get a lot better before it can replace monitors.

@yogthos Then it makes sense that they would invest in interactive legless avatars instead of improving the technology to make it actually useful.

@yogthos I wonder how much Meta factored in a new era of virtual feudalism in the metaverse. Maybe the fictitious capital got to their head.

@vaselinedeel420 I do suspect they ended up drinking their own kool-aid on that one
