Meanwhile Twitter's Bluesky is still obsessed with impractical P2P protocols and end-to-end encryption. It's as if they're trying to reinvent the wheel, but the result turns out square, and they assume it'd somehow be better. Imagine them spending all this time implementing #ActivityPub into Twitter instead.

@grishka @activitypub Twitter doesnt have any incentive to develop a truly decentralized platform. I think they are simply developing something that will obfuscate the fact that they are collecting user data.

That shit's gonna be slow as fuck

Gregory

@shitpisscum I mean look at the gif on their website: peergos.org/posts/decentralize

It takes solid 3 seconds to render the news feed. THREE. SECONDS.

(for comparison: Smithereen renders the news feed in around 100 ms and I consider that to be on the slower side)

FelineDisrespect

@grishka So what they are saying is it's using HTTPS 🤣

Gregory

@shitpisscum yeah it might be "end-to-end encrypted", depending on how you define the ends

peergos

@grishka @shitpisscum Nope. Just the standard definition of end-to-end encryption. The servers can't decrypt anything. The keys are only ever client side. You can learn more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End-to-e

@Hyolobrika P2P requires client software. E2E adds the complexity of key management which is unacceptable for most users.

@grishka @Hyolobrika is this necessarily the case? there are torrent clients that run in the browser.
Gregory

@joeri @Hyolobrika those abuse WebRTC as far as I know and thus aren't compatible with traditional torrent clients. You can't create arbitrary TCP connections from the browser.

peergos

@grishka @Hyolobrika If you try out Peergos you'll see that users do not need to ever see a key, or do any key management (This is a design requirement). It's all done automatically (in the client!) when they decide to share something, or change their password etc. Encryption and privacy shouldn't only be for people smart enough to understand how to use PGP.

@grishka @activitypub And to be clear, we've been working on this since 2013, long before bluesky (or activity pub!) was a thing. It takes a long time to get privacy and security right, especially in a P2P setting.
