@WeShall @dansinker shitty history, but after reading it I am not sure the actual voting system is racist. Generally speaking Ranked Choice voting is more democratic and run off elections are similar. Black people are minorities in most places in the US, them being a minority does not make the election rules racist. These election rules don't seem racist, but perhaps many Georgia voters are. But of course the opponent is black too, making that argument a bit less convincing. So you're saying that this law, by racists, that instantiated a voting system *meant* to be racist, *failed* to actually, successfully be racist? Even though it did actually bring about racist ends? I mean, at that point I'm all, "but it's the thought that counts." For this sort of thing, I am willing to give full marks for effort. @WeShall @dansinker @creatinglake @dansinker The legal origin of Georgia's runoff law is that it was put into place to prevent Black people from winning elections. https://www.washingtonpost.com/made-by-history/2022/12/05/georgia-runoff-warnock-walker/ @dandean @creatinglake literally put in place in the weeks before the Civl Rights Act was passed to dilute the power of newly-enfranchised black voters. @dansinker i wonder how much the republican also being black affected it this time... (don't know who ran against whom in previous elections though) @carcinopithecus I mean the law has been around since it was passed in the weeks before the Civl Rights Act was passed in 1964 and was explicitly designed to dilute the votes of black folks so it's not really about the color of the candidate but about disenfranchising the voter @dansinker Thanks because I noticed the history of these rules hasn’t been mentioned in the election covers. More people need to know. |
@dansinker how are the rules racist?
