WhatsApp or any other centralized messenger that is owned by corporations, just like Twitter is disastrous for ordinary users.

As an alternative, you can consider a messenger based on #Matrix. Its working principle is similar to #Mastodon. It's a federated messenger where you can register on one of the servers and communicate with other people who are registered on other servers. The great thing about this service is that they mostly do not require you to provide your phone number.
