The reason the fediverse is seen as a viable alternative to Twitter is because the media won't shut up about it. And when I say "it" I don't mean fedi, I mean "The Mastodon Network" and its supposed sole creator.
They don't know how this place works, they don't care how it runs. The media wanted a sensational story with a clearly defined hero protagonist and the users just want to keep posting.
