sigh. okay, I'll bite: why does it matter who defederates with whom if you are not on one of the servers affected?

I *think* I know what other people think about this but I'd be curious to hear from individuals

@darius is there a way to know who federates, or doesn't, with whom? I haven't found it I think.

Darius Kazemi

@flancian no you pretty much have to rely on people self-reporting this information

In #Flancia we'll meet

@darius is it only me or that sucks? It seems instances should at least have a mechanism to report this openly; [[open]] seems like a good default for the [[fediverse]] to me?

@flancian @darius

For Mastodon in particular, the about page has an autogenerated table showing which instances they mute or block. However, this is optional. When creating a block or mute, one can choose whether to make it public.

@krinkle @darius oh, very nice! thanks a lot for the information.

It seems it should be relatively straightforward to scrape this information and assemble it into an optional [[graph]] of the [[fediverse]]? Do you know of such a thing being available somewhere?

I know about gitlab.com/tao_oat/fediverse.s but I haven't tried it yet. Was thinking of setting it up.

@flancian @krinkle Very few instances I know of actually choose to expose their block lists though. Exposing who you block is a known attack surface, basically a provocation to say "here is who I don't like, come and get me if you don't like it"

In #Flancia we'll meet

@darius @krinkle right, that makes sense.

But I don't get it, couldn't we go in a more "positive" direction and show which instances have high affinity by measuring e.g. number of mutual follows?

Darius Kazemi

@flancian @krinkle that seems like a good idea to me!

In #Flancia we'll meet

@darius @krinkle I will try to find tools/services/settings that allow us to do this, or develop them if needed.

@darius I'm only a little on edge because I have seen posts go around with "defederate from instance A because they federate with instance B" and.... if people move to more of an allowlist method of federation, that'd be sad for tiny instances like mine. it's a fairly tangential concern though

You want @mwl@io.mwl.io

@darius

For most people, not so much.

For abusers, or those who wish to be jerks, it's a huge deal. They see people behaving like themselves being blocked, and fear they might suffer the same fate.

I'm on a high-asshole-blocking instance, and I like it that way.

pine "two cats" trees

@darius for technical aspects it doesn't afaik.
for friendship-alignment purposes it does, same as trying to maintain "neutral third party" ship among a broken set of friend groups.

we are on a SOCIAL media website and so social things are what we do on this website.

@darius we defederated from gab, and I heard the server went down?
When many defederate from a server, it's an aggressive measure. The users on that server gets a smaller fediverse, less fun interactions, and drop off the server to various degrees.

This tactic only works if many other servers agree. Therefore, it's important to talk about how it happens. Because communication is good.

@darius I'm following the discussion because I have had positive and negative interactions with some folks from the shitposting side (that overall left me with a deep distrust of everyone in that whole scene), and I've had positive interactions from the sincere side, and I suspect my admins here DGAF and just want to have fun, so I am tentatively thinking that I should move to an instance that's more actively aligned with my values and more hometown-like. But I don't know where that is or what, exactly, values I'm trying to live by with that decision process.
