I was not anything even close to a junglist but I've been reminiscing about when I was a teenager and I'd stay up until midnight on Friday nights just to hear the 2 hour electronic music block they played once a week on the local alt rock radio station. Jungle was always my favorite, then maybe big beat. I would tape the whole show and listen to it on my Walkman the rest of the week. Aphrodite was probably my favorite, I used to flip out to this track (still do)

Although it was probably Aphrodite's remix of the Fugees "Ready or Not" that convinced me as a young hip hop head that jungle was worth my time. This fuckin rules

@Greg and now YOU have jogged my memory, there was a cool kids clothing shop that I never otherwise would have set foot in but they also sold drum n bass vinyl records so I'd work up my courage and go in to dig through records

@darius I was so bummed when I found out Aphrodite was a dude

@darius I haven’t thought of Aphrodite in 15 or 20 yeas! I did the same as you, recording electronic music shows onto reused tapes on my boom box!

@darius
"fuckin rules" is a perfect description. I've never listened to much jungle but this reminds me particularly of Super Sharp Shooter, which I guess makes sense since DJ Zinc apparently did the first jungle version of Ready Or Not

@darius In the late 90s while at university in Vancouver, I subscribed to cable TV not for the TV, but to get a Seattle radio station that played 3 hours of electronic music from 9 PM to midnight on Saturdays. The other show I listened to was CBC Radio 2’s Brave New Waves, which would play jungle/drum'n'bass. 90s-style DnB is still alive, I found out last year. Tranquil’s 20 Years Too Late (great album name!) and J Majik’s Full Circle (ditto) are recent releases.
