@liaizon @dheadshot there is a third option of "not specified" actually. But I might add something like "I identify as" when I'll be making profile fields.

@liaizon @dheadshot also pronouns are English only — not very good for internationalization. For example I've yet to see a Russian person who would prefer a non-standard pronoun.

@grishka @dheadshot was just in Berlin for most of last year and many of the people I was spending time with there were using alternative pronouns in non English languages. Portuguese, German and Spanish specifically. I know a few Russian speakers (Kazakh and Kyrgyz) who have been interviewing folks in the Russian sphere about this issue too.

@liaizon @dheadshot but the thing is, how do you translate such pronouns between languages? And, in Russian again, certain words, like verbs in past tense, change suffixes based on the gender:
M: Иван оставил комментарий
F: Анастасия оставила комментарий
There's no gender-neutral form. There's "neutral" grammatical gender (with suffix -о) but it's never used with people. Some people get around this by writing constructs like "оставил(а)", but that just feels sloppy.

@liaizon @dheadshot actually I only now noticed that Mastodon is doing this exact thing lol
