@danbruno by the way someone referred to Duvalie as the best character in CS4 and I have to agree. @danbruno the person whose comment I was reading on reddit somewhere made the point that basically all the main characters have figured out their basic growth stuff by game 4 (or 9, heh) so Duvalie is a nice change as someone who has a bunch of internalized shit she still needs to get over @darius Yeah that feels like a big drawback of this approach. Some of the personal stakes (for Old Class VII in particular) are pretty stale by now—until something actually gets resolved, I don't know that I need Xeno and Leo to tell Fie that "she's grown" again. Duvalie feels fresh by comparison. I have enough affection for the cast that I can overlook how thin some of them feel here, but it definitely feels like the story is getting away from them a little @danbruno yeah I found myself ignoring old class vii to a degree that I never would have guessed. I think the new class and the other supplemental characters are just more interesting at this point! It's kind of like stuff with Joshua in any of the games after SC: he was very interesting, then it all got resolved, now he is just some generic big brother type guy. Which is fine but it means I don't care about him so much anymore @darius Yeah agreed—at this point I'm mostly interested in what the endgame is for the old guard (does Estelle get to S rank? Does the SSS liberate Crossbell? Do Jusis and Machias ever get married?) I think the thing I really want more of is throwing everyone into a blender to get new combinations of people. There was a bunch of that on the Pantagruel and I eat that stuff up. Let me see how Elie and Kurt get along, or Kloe and Elliot, or whatever @danbruno apparently Hajimari does this in its episodes! I was reading some of the episode descriptions and was delighted at a few of the team-ups @danbruno oh have you done the history quiz side quest with a reporter? Once you do I want to talk about it @danbruno ha, that was definitely the only one of the quiz quests that I got completely right. So Nielsen: Anguis, right? Or maybe a Dominion? @darius He definitely seems like someone! Interesting that he showed up in the last game in every arc… Do the people inside Ouroboros know who all the Anguis are? Or the other Church bigshots know who all the Dominions are? I would have expected Duvalie/Gaius to clock him if so…maybe they don't though? @danbruno we know less about the church than about ourobouros but in the case of the latter I'm pretty sure not everyone has seen everyone. Like they all gather in the celestial globe and have the option to be anonymous and I think many of them just retain anonymity. Like, Campanella does not actually see anyone in Star Door 14. I think Anguis identity is on a need to know basis even for other Anguis (otherwise vita would've ratted them out I think) @danbruno and not that this necessarily confirms anything but the JP voice actor for Nielsen in 3rd is apparently the same voice actor for the first Anguis (and also, uh, Tita's dad) @darius Ooh yeah that makes sense. In CS2 Sharon says something like "your number doesn't have anything to do with your combat prowess, but in McBurn's case he's No. 1 and actually does happen to be the strongest," which I was thinking implies that she knows who everyone is—but she's presumably only talking about Enforcers, not Anguis. Really any kind of amiable traveling fellow who says hey to the protagonists every so often should immediately raise their suspicions, haha @danbruno yeah I think all the enforcers are known to each other (even if it's not their full identity, a la Bleublanc) @danbruno he didn't even leave a bunch of baroque clues lying around, amazing @danbruno also I just went back and read what scant 1st Anguis dialog we have and I think Nielsen is a good personality match! @danbruno btw did you see that Dec 17 is a big product announcement day for Falcom's 40th anniversary? I think they even confirmed they are going to announce the next Trails game @darius I saw! Man, I wish there were some way to get us a little closer to the Japanese release schedule…I know the loc process must be impossibly long, and I hear Falcom often doesn't even turn their attention to overseas publishing until the game is out, but it's rough in a world where so many games get simultaneous worldwide releases There's still noise about them localizing Crossbell too, maybe that's in the cards! @danbruno right, there's a Chinese and Japanese Switch release of crossbell coming, yeah? Also I still need to actually finish Ao, I just ended up reading a detailed summary before CS4. I'm also considering somehow getting my hands on the Japanese Hajimari and trying out the ps4 remote play spreadsheet app thing... @darius Yeah the spreadsheet thing looks super impressive! I'll probably wait a little bit to see if an official release is forthcoming but if seems like it's not I'll do the same. If you play Japanese Hajimari, maybe the new Geofront fan translation of Ao will be done by the time you're finished 😛 Nonstop Trails |
@darius For sure. Speaking of which, I can't even imagine jumping into CS4 without having all of that in your head, hah. It's so thick with callbacks that it must be unintelligible. Act 2 in particular felt like it was full of conversations like:
"Have you heard from A and B recently?"
"No. Not from C, D, or E, either."
"Right…I'm worried about F, and G too of course, but they're probably fine…"
