Attempting to make sense of my music collection once again. Basically iTunes circa 2004 was my perfect music management situation: all my mp3s in one place, searchable database, synced to a mobile device (iPod in that case), dynamic playlists. After iTunes became unusable, I moved to Google Music, which is of course now deprecated, so I downloaded my collection and am seeking suggestions for music library management software!

@darius have you played with Funkwhale at all?

@darius I imported my iTunes library into Plex earlier this year and use Plexamp (available on Mac, Win, Linux, iOS, and Android) to listen to it fairly often.

@darius itunes feels sort of like 2004 itunes if you turn on the column browser and ignore the other goofy decisions that have been happening for nearly a decade oh wait maybe it's bad

@darius Beets is very good, but isn't an integrated solution -- it will tag, organize, and search, but is a CLI tool and focused on management, not playing. But if you choose a player that you just point at its output directory, it might be a reasonable companion.

Quod Libet is a strong contender, but I never dived too deep into its management/organization features.

@darius this is why I'm still using Banshee! iTunes was one of the few programs I was sorry to say goodbye to when I ditched Windows. Banshee is buggy as hell and hasn't been developed in ages, but it allows me to edit metadata, organize my bloated music collection, and do cool things with playlists. I am Very Interested in what you end up using, because Banshee is going to be a dead end sooner or later. 🎧

@darius i am in a weirdly similar situation.

i am using plex until i find something more suited for me. i don’t love it but it has lots of itunesy features and i can use first-party and third-party clients and stream music from home when i am out with my phone.

i am using beets to organize/tag my files, and the plex server just mindlessly reads from that library.

my most used plex feature is the plexamp client’s “random album radio” which just plays me random albums in order!

@darius Because I went iOS only, this is now a huge nightmare for me. I had a meticulously organised collection in iTunes of all my bought digital albums and all my CDs I'd ripped, but there is now no way to organise that.

I've given up on my collection and am just listening to albums I've bought on iTunes that I've downloaded to my phone. Sad.

@darius I use MusicBrainz Picard for all my tagging needs, and still use Clementine for my player even though it's not actively developed. It's flexible and has everything I want in a music player.

@darius Closed Source/Windows: MediaMonkey. Open Source: Strawberry.

@darius I really like the music player Clementine. It's not trying to be old iTunes but it has the same vibe as is very playlist based.

@darius I'd love if you kept us all updated on this! I migrated to YouTube Music as Google Music demanded, and I'm unwilling to pay to listen to my own music and thus am pretty unhappy with the service

@darius I use Logitech media server so I can do multi room audio. It's a bit of an old school web interface but it's cool. It's all open source these days.

@darius Great question. If you find it, let me know. I am living with Rhythmbox and Lollipop on Linux, but still not as good as I imagine it could be.
