hey #fediverse people:
has anyone made a fedi bot that lets you follow the posts from another fediverse user but translated into the language of your choice?

lets say @moss@grassy.feild only posts in german but I dont speak any german so instead of following them I dm @TranslationBot "follow @moss@grassy.feild in english" and then @TranslationBot makes a private repost account that replies to their public posts with the translation in english and tags me in it.

@liaizon Something like the OCR bot, only for languages? That would be really helpful 👍.

@liaizon a neat idea but someone nefarious could use it to get around personal/instance blocks

@liaizon This would be beautiful.

The bot should probably include a link to the original post. Character limitations of translations may be an issue, but may also be not.

Feels a bit like there is potential for some strange social consequences, if user A does not follow user B directly, but only by proxy. Should user B always get tagged by the bot? Then consent from user B should be needed beforehand. Otherwise there is a lot of potential for inadverted subtooting.

@floppy I would even be OK with the bot asking consent from the other side. That should mitigate many weird situations. It could even require both people to follow eachother first before it would "activate" and then you could unfollow each other directly after the "translation bridge" was initiated

@liaizon That sounds so much worse than just making a DeepL integration in your client.

@Gargron I would love a client that has good customizable translation built in. I have not yet seen this done well but I would love too. I keep following people that post in languages I can't read and I would like to have some solution other then translating each post manually.

@liaizon @apps para movil tiene traductor.

En web yo hago como dice Gargron pero en vez xe DeepL es otro traductor.

@liaizon the #Fedilab client has built in translation, in case that helps.

@Fu it does not help in this case. I want something that is for the web where I am already using the fediverse. and that only works if all the sides are using the same client, which for me isn't actually an option since I am still using an old iPhone.

@˗ˏˋ wakest ˎˊ˗ I have made an extension app for Hubzilla, which translates posts through DeepL API. It works but it is in alpha state. Translation of everything slows stream loading, I have to make DeepL calls client-side by javascript to click just the post you want to translate and not everything server-side. If I had some time I would finish it for Streams. But I can make a repo meanwhile.
