If you're curious how #Mastodon is doing by the numbers, the 2023 Annual Report is finally here. How large is our budget, and where does it go? Who works on Mastodon? For all of this and more, we've got an answer--at least as far as 2023 goes.

@zalasur @Mastodon They say "A bit late in the year, perhaps" and add "We have already started work on the 2024 one, though!" in the linked post

@Mastodon

2023?

It's almost 2025 where I am

How about where you are?

And where does the money come from?

@FinchHaven It's explained on the article for the @Mastodon Annual Report for 2023. They have more data for the 2023 report than before and have also already started on the 2024 report.

The income is from patreon donations and one large corporate donation of $100,000 from Sujitech - a Japanese tech company.

It is all in the report which is accessible from the linked article.

@gelbphoenix

Which I have read, previously

And the preceding "annual report" before this one, as well

But thanks for straightening me out

@FinchHaven take a look at the blog post and report. The 2024 version will be more timely.

David

@Mastodon thank you for petting this together. The donor numbers feel concerning.
But I guess, 2024 was very different. Felt like an explosion of the Fediverse.
Really curious about the 2024 development and report. 👍

@Mastodon The annual report 2023 arrives at the end of 2024. Quite late, isn’t it? When to expect the 2024 report?

Jenefar

@Mastodon If you also want to take advantage of the Happy New Year offer, then visit quickly and take advantage of the offer.

Bruno Amaral

@Mastodon don’t you mean 2024? I know there are still some days left in the year but going back to 2023 is odd.

Andy Piper

@brunoamaral the later publication is something that we acknowledge in the blog post and report; the next one will be more timely.

@Mastodon Don't worry about those naysayers. I still need to publish my annual report from 1924. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@coraven @Mastodon This is not that kind of report. It is completely voluntary.

Ben Thompson

@Mastodon lot of folk responding to this must be in the private (or state) sector! many of the small non-profits I work with are just publishing their 2023 annual reports this week as well.

Well done to all. Very impressive given the budget.

@jbenjamint @Mastodon yep, great to see ... read through all of it.

@Mastodon Guess I'm late to point out the 2023. Great software and Happy New Year! 🥳

Lou Reynolds

@Mastodon Thanks for this.

To those complaining that this is late I say - better late than never!

Love this quote: “Building our human connections on common protocols, rather than walled gardens, is the only way forward.”

I believe this is even more obvious now than it has ever been and I expect Mastodon to steadily grow as more people grasp this fact.

Thanks to the entire Mastodon team and enjoy your holidays. I’m sure next year will be busy!!!

@lrreynolds we are going to be starting at a run! FOSDEM 2025 approaches, and we have a lot of things underway. Thanks for your support 🙏🏻

@Mastodon

I'm new to Mastodon, and finding i very hard to use. I have NO IDEA how to join the various other versions.

TheFederatedPipe

You don't need to join the other "versions", you can interact with the users on those other "versions" without having to be there. You don't have to think about it.

Analogies

Just like email. If I'm on hotmail.com and you are on gmail.com, we can still communicate without you having to sign up for a hotmail account.

Or our phone numbers, we don't need to be on the same provider in order to have a call.

Example

You are on mastodon and I am on a completely different software that has nothing to do with Mastodon, yet you can still see this reply, because despite their difference they decided to speak the same "language".

Keep in mind:

- "versions" = instances.
- "language" = a protocol.

You don't need to join the other "versions", you can interact with the users on those other "versions" without having to be there. You don't have to think about it.

Analogies

Just like email. If I'm on hotmail.com and you are on gmail.com, we can still communicate without you having to sign up for a hotmail account.

Hey Numabiena, welcome! 👋

Yeah, as Petra says, there is lots of help for beginners at fedi.tips and also please feel free to ask any questions you have!

I run this unofficial support account for Mastodon and the Fediverse, and I try to help people who want help, especially beginners.

@Mastodon @Gargron thanks for all you are doing. I echo the lateness critique, but don’t want that to diminish the work you have and continue to do. We’re a passionate group. Looking forward to reading 2024’s a little earlier next year.

Thank you all!

gi124

@Mastodon wow. you run this on 500k? spectacular.

elCelio 🇪🇺 🇺🇦

@gi124 @Mastodon
that's for development.

there are also the costs of each instance for servers and admin expenses.

David Clubb

@Mastodon love everything about Mastodon.

One suggestion; also do a web version of the annual report? Here's an example of how we do ours at @nicw nationalinfrastructurecommissi

Chris‌‬ Hayes‌

@Mastodon Interesting and nice design!

Suggestion for the 2024 report - it would be neat if each time someone is mentioned in the report, if there was a link to their Mastodon account.

Andy Piper

@chris_hayes good call on that, will make sure we try to do it for the next one.

@Mastodon
thank you. I had been looking forward to it for a while!

@Mastodon thanks for this! On page 5, you mention "better user retention" ... are there any metrics related to this? CC @andypiper in casae you have the data.
