In the past 2 years or so that I've been on the Fediverse, I've been following people because I enjoy reading what they have to say, and want to keep up with their posts. I've seen many other people apparently doing this too.

I have just now been told authoritatively and forcefully that this is not OK and never has been OK, and that follows are intended only for personal friends.

Is that true? When did this happen? Did I snooze during that part of the orientation? Did I miss a meeting?
