📣 Attention all custom ROM users and advocates for digital rights! 📣

Google's Play Integrity is limiting access to certain functionalities and applications for those using custom operating systems. This is a direct attack on the open-source community and a step towards further consolidating Google's monopoly in the mobile ecosystem.

The European Commission is aware of the situation, but has deemed it a low priority: europarl.europa.eu/doceo/docum

It's time for us to take action and show Google and the EU how much we care about this issue! 💥

Sign the petition now to stop Google from limiting access to custom ROMs: change.org/p/stop-google-from-

#StopGoogleMonopoly #CustomROMs #DigitalRights #OpenSource #PlayIntegrity #Google #deGoogle #privacy #right2repair #rightorepair #r2r #EU

Let's unite and fight for our right to use and develop custom operating systems! 💪

Stop Google from Limiting Custom ROMs!

The Issue:
Google systematically blocks access to apps and functionalities for users running custom Android operating systems, affecting millions of tech-savvy users who modify their devices.

Why Users Choose Custom ROMs:
• Overcome programmed obsolescence when manufacturers stop updating
• Fix bugs in stock operating systems
• Personalize and customize their device's software
• Improve performance and privacy

Google's False Justification:
Google claims Play Integrity ensures "app security" by verifying unmodified app binaries on "genuine" Android devices. In reality, this is a tactic to:
• Maintain its mobile operating system monopoly
• Restrict user choice
• Convince developers to stay dependent on Play Store

Our Demand:
We call on European Union to consider investigating the monopolistic tactics, and ask Google to allow custom ROM users to:
• Access all applications
• Use device capabilities fully
• Exercise their right to modify owned technology

This is about digital freedom, user rights, and challenging corporate control over personal technology.

Sign now to support technological freedom!

I am not the author of the petition, but I think it is a good idea to support the existing petition. However, if you want to create a petition on the European Union's platform for citizens, that would be a great idea.

@debby I think putting pressure on app devs not to force their apps to be dependent upon Google Play is an important part of this too. I believe part of the anti-trust case focuses some on this aspect. But with the new administration coming to power soon in the US who knows what will happen with these lawsuits. But if devs change how their apps function alternative OS users will have a much larger pool of apps to use.

@apicultor @debby @GrapheneOS yup, and also ping @LineageOS and @microg

I hope I won't have to go back to some old Nokia dumbphone again...

@PC_Fluesterer
Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

@gunchleoc has pointed out that the EU has its own platform for petitions: europarl.europa.eu/petitions/e

Perhaps you could create a petition there?

This is a great alternative to change.org for submitting petitions on issues that matter to EU citizens.

I encourage everyone to consider using this platform to make their voices heard and bring attention to the issue of Google limiting access to custom ROMs.

@debby @PC_Fluesterer @gunchleoc espechally since the #EU parlament can consequence-free ignore 3rd party petition sites.

Is there any Google app that doesn’t work on so called ‘custom ROMs’ other than Google Pay?

@debby Google tends to argue that developers have the choice to use Play Integrity or not. Which is actually true but official Android documentation closely links towards Google Play Services.

Sapio tries to highlight apps that don't work on deGoogled ROMs. There is a share feature to raise awareness among developers who are depending too much on Google Play Services.

@debby @RavenLuni I'd happily sign, but change.org does not work on firefox, and I'm not going to install chrome. I'm sure you can understand that?

Raven Luni

@gmc @debby I use firefox and it worked fine for me. Are you using noscript?

Koen Martens

@RavenLuni @debby Might have to try again then. I don't use noscript. There was another petition a month or two ago, and it didn't work. Contacted them, and they told me I must use Google Chrome.

Raven Luni

@gmc @debby Only an amateur would tell you to use a specific browser. All decent sites should work with any browser.

Koen Martens

@RavenLuni @debby well, if that was the only bad thing that could be said about change.org it wouldn't be so bad. But that's for another thread.

Tried again, seems they used some of their profits to fix compatibility, because it seems I was able to sign this one.

@debby I would sign more change.org petitions but they send me 70,000 emails every time I breathe in their vicinity

@debby google play integrity is snakeoil security that only restricts user freedom

it (and any similar kind of attestation) shouldn't exist

@SupportGrapheneOS_667 Thank you for sharing the GrapheneOS Attestation compatibility guide

@debby They should be banned and sanctioned years ago for their shitty moves, policies, monopolistic practices, tons of lies and other crap. But nobody cares. Even such entity like European Commission doesn't care about it at all. Why? Because of the money they have. Money rules with everything today. Who got money, got power. And all the others can only kiss their own asses. It is way too late for any complaints. That's sadly is. Case closed.

Hello @MartinBe ,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this important issue. I appreciate your passion and frustration regarding the situation with Google and the European Commission. However, I’d like to offer a different perspective.

While it’s true that corporate power and money can often overshadow the voices of individuals and smaller communities, I believe that it’s never too late to advocate for change. Complaining may seem futile at times, but history has shown us that collective action can lead to significant shifts in policy and corporate behavior.

The fact that we’re discussing this issue is a step in the right direction. By raising awareness and mobilizing support through petitions and discussions, we can create a ripple effect that encourages others to join the cause. The more we unite and voice our concerns, the harder it becomes for entities like Google to ignore us.

Moreover, the European Commission may currently view this as a low priority, but that doesn’t mean we should accept it as the final word. Engaging in dialogue, raising awareness, and pushing for investigations can help shift their perspective. Change often starts with a few determined individuals who refuse to back down.

So, while I understand your sentiment that it feels late for complaints, I firmly believe that every voice matters, and every action counts. Let’s continue to advocate for digital rights and the open-source community, because together, we can make a difference!

Let’s keep the conversation going and explore ways we can take action. 💪

@debby what's even more important is to strenghten #alternatives like @fdroidorg and to support those alongside them.

- Also @EUCommission is responsible for killing #AndroidPit & #AppBrain as domestic competitiors with bureaucratic bs like "per #EU #member #VAT payments" under the guise of combatting 'tax dodging'...

@debby@hear-me.social

caveat: I'm boosting and commenting as solidarity. im signing this and you should too. however:

I think this is a drop of water in the ocean tbh. im basically fully open source with linneage os. the only proprietary app I run is discord (and Waze). there's open source alternatives to these apps but like.. 🤷 I'm lazy.

I think we should continue to develop the open source repository of android apps. also we can probably trick Google lol
