I think... @JesseSkinner can't really promise anything but it's been some years now and i inevitably end up coming back in,the end. Iโm sorry.  @JesseSkinner I will continue to use both, but what I would LIKE to see is Mastodon fast track more and better Trust & Safety features, because so far bsky is miles ahead of them. On xhitter, accounts you block can read your posts. On Bsky a block quashes replies, detaches QTs, and bans them to the shadow realm. It starves harassment accounts. That's ONE thing that puts it ahead of something like Threads, but it's far from the only one. Mastodon... doesn't even have limited replies.  @JesseSkinner I tried Bluesky but couldn't fathom it out. Yes, I know it takes time and one has to put the effort in. However, I actually find it easier here. Boosted. But I find the Bluesky jealousy to be weird and non-productive. Mastodon software is not where it needs to be. Following people sucks for new users. It's weird that following hashtags is better than following people...and then hashtags are hidden in the UI. I hate that I can't see my all my lists on one page. Why isn't the mobile app as good as the mobile web page? It's time to reflect and rebuild. @rob agreed. But yeah don't use the official app, there are better ones out there. ๐คท All of them have flaws. I primarily use Ivory. But it doesn't refresh when you have a conversation without doing post gymnastics. I've been using PWAs on my phone (elk.zone and phanpy.social) to get a little extra functionality. But man, both of those get super confusing in threads with many replies. This is why new users don't like Mastodon. Most of the options are terrible and not well thought out. Do you know what app doesn't suck? I donate to my server's patreon, and I encourage others to do that as well. And definitely check out the other Fediverse apps out there too. ...which apps? I've tried Trunks (memory issues on the iPhone *and* desktop), Whalebird (can't get past 20 posts), Ice Cubes (looks like Android circa 2016). Where is this magical app you speak of that doesn't suck in many ways? I'm here! I'm ready to receive the knowledge. Literally none - and I mean NONE - of them are good. The state of Mastodon apps - even the grand poobah Ivory, which is the least bad of all of them - is TERRIBLE. @JesseSkinner I don't have anywhere else to go but Mastodon remains untenable for me, it's too confusing to use. That people are saying this, frequently, despite the barriers to that opinion being heard at all, should make this an undeniable, indisputable fact. Yet the people who aren't confused are in denial. The replies in this post didn't load for me the first time I clicked on it, no idea why not. It needs to be obvious where I click to see people engaging. It needs to work every time. @JesseSkinner And then I tried to post that last comment and I get a popup with a list of users that hides the reply icon and all the other post related icons. Can't proceed until I've clicked a name. Another poor design barrier to a single comment. It needs to be obvious and simple, that kind of thing simply can't be happening. @SilenceEtchedOnAWall is this on the official Mastodon mobile app? If so, be sure to try out the other fediverse apps on your platform too. @JesseSkinner Firefox browser. Having to install an app or check out multiple apps is another thing that shouldn't be happening, this should all work on browser too. @SilenceEtchedOnAWall ah k. Yeah I agree. I also want platforms (in addition to operating system and user land software) which are libre licensed and open source. @JesseSkinner I keep a foot in mastodon because I think itโs dumb to put all your eggs in one basket. This is the reason the internet has become so centralized, and why so many people are stuck on X despite hating it so. I intend to build a community here as much as on bluesky, and if anything were to happen there, i will have this platform to fall back on. @JesseSkinner Restricted to just Mastodon users, or is the rest of the Fediverse invited?
@JesseSkinner Yeah I'm done with every social network that incurs switching costs. I don't care how good it looks now, I'm not getting trapped again. @JesseSkinner it's sad to see popular ppl migrating to bs instead of mastodon... There's no guarantee bs wonโt be bought by the next right-wing tycoon or Elon Musk himself in the future. @JesseSkinner I joined BlueSky just to see what the fuss was about. It's alright. But I just don't find it as enjoyable as here. Maybe I'm just old, but I started using social media with MySpace, before there was an algorithm finding content for you. I prefer the adventure and challenge of finding things to follow on my own. I can tweak the algorithm over there, definitely, but it feels artificial. @CoachJZ It feels like most fediverse users were around back in those days (or earlier) and love that feel of things. People who think Mastodon is an app are more likely to go elsewhere. hard to say on the other hand, blue sky is over run with morons @failedLyndonLaRouchite yeah it takes more work to build up a decent feed here. Happy to share tips if you like  @JesseSkinner I'll tell you want, I'll stick around if the fediverse stays less popular, but if it becomes more popular then I'm fleeing for BBS's @JesseSkinner Mastodon and the Fediverse is the cafe (or bar) to sit with a coffee (or beer) to watch and debate the chaos of the world outside.  @JesseSkinner The fediverse/mastodon is the only social network you can count on at this point. IMHO. @JesseSkinner I've never been impressed by popularity. After all, Twitter once had that status... @MondayMarionJ good point, that's probably true of everyone around here who didn't just come in the most recent wave. @JesseSkinner I'm happy here and it will be two years for me in January. It's the only place I feel comfortable and welcome. |
@JesseSkinner Until Bluesky is **actually** decentralized and open source (not the fake bullshit they've got going on now) there's no point in putting myself into the pocket of another rich white guy. I'll stick with Mastodon thanks.
