@Gargron hey man, is there a way to "search by keywords" throughout the network in Mastodon? searching by hashtags only is definitely not enough to gather info about any subject.

@Gargron for that to work it needs to be able to switch hosting providers while taking your own domain name/id with you, which probably means that virtualhosting is a hard requirement. switching servers needs to be like switching email providers - followers don't notice

@Gargron For me, the big challenge in the transition from a monolithic to a federated medium is the looming possibility of an instance disappearing without a trace, and needing to rebuild my identity from scratch. Personally I put a lot of emphasis on account as identity, whereas I know some people view their identity as separate from their presence.

I really disliked, on Facebook, how you would opt to follow someone and never see their posts; will Mastodon be different?

And just curious, how does your flagging of posts work? On Facebook they flag a lot of posts that are harmless, and then let other, very harmful posts circulate - will that be different as well?

@Gargron Hey Eugen, decided to try out Mastodon for the first time. Have to say it looks surprisingly polished! I came here because after all the crazy news with FB recently, I am trying to figure out ways to distance myself from it. One of the things that have been plaguing FB hard is content moderation and fact-checking. What resources does Mastodon provide that can allow the platform to avoid the same spread of misinformation that FB has allowed? Transparency is key and FB is a black-box.

Unfortunately, a disk broke because I had to change my server and everything did not work out again with the installation. I wanted to import my backup. But my backup disk also broke. So I had to set everything up again. Now I can do it again

The learning curve is a bit different, but I think people will come to enjoy it much more than what other social media is offering, imho.

@Gargron sorry to break it to you, but the way you've set up this platform has made this an impossibility. You make it so I can upload up to 8mb sized image, & then say the reason I can't upload a 1080p image in original quality to any Mastodon services, despite being less than 1mb in size, is because "storage costs money."

If you want Mastodon to be a viable publishing platform, then don't push creators like me away by forcing my images to a pre-2005 level quality for no good reason at all.

@Gargron Some thoughts:This desperately needs an 'official' app and a direct sign up option for mastadon.online. the ability to choose a network is amazing, but confusing to many and not necessary until after being onboarded and learning more about it. Once there is no confusing sign in processes I truly believe this will expand exponentially.
