I've used Namecheap for over a decade, but my annual VPS is coming due, plus I have a couple other websites on shared hosting plans and I wanted to setup a dedicated server, move Mastodon and my other websites over and decided to go with Hetzner.

I go to #Hetzner to sign up for a new account, and after I am done, try to log in to order my plan and I immediately get this in my email with no information on how to find out why or how to correct.

Not only is the email insulting, but no information on their decision...

I used the email address I have had since Gmail was beta, my home address to the home we own and the phone number I've had since 2004.

Fine. You don't want me a customer, I am glad I found out now, now delete all the information I gave you when I signed up for an account 15 minutes ago and I'll take my $100 a month for all the services I was going to setup with you, that I have been paying Namecheap for over a decade, elsewhere. #mastoadmin #Selfhosting

@tiamat271 I know, right. I have something special I am going to setup for the two-year anniversary of doing fediverse Hashtag Games, too. I spent a week looking over my options and trying to decide to merge all my services to one dedicated box, to make it easier for me to manage everything I do.

@paul I’ve read stories (Reddit) about Hetzner and their very “strict” vetting of customers. I was lucky and got an account with them without issue and that’s where I ran my last instance for about six months without issue.

My current hosting provider is https://hostup.se. Great pricing and big VPS’s. I’m running this instance on a 4 vCPU, 16GB RAM and 200GB storage for about $11/mo.

@paul When I was moving to Hetzner, going through ID verification, the only way to verify was to download a proprietary app from google play, must be made by the app. I have Play blocked on my phone and I'm not gonna unblock it just for this spyware. So I wrote them a support request, asking for other verification methods, explaining my frustration with proprietary apps. 1h later account activated, no ID necessary. So, prove that you are just a human by explaining your situation to support.
