@sjolsen This is the way tumblr works, and i used to use masto like this until i was told I should boost a lot less often, so im torn now It seems that boosting etiquette has shifted just in the year I've been here. I showed up in the big wave of ex redditors and when I first got here it was "Boost a lot! Like doesn't really do anything." No longer. @eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen I guess the news never made it to me, I still boost to like and favorite to bookmark. I don’t think I’ll be changing my habits anytime soon. @iiogama @eestileib @sjolsen That's good! Because I'll probably be boosting a whole lot more from now on @eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen Lawd save me from unspoken rules of etiquette! Rules about bios, rules about following, about following BACK, about liking or boosting or what have you. I like/found interesting/found valuable/wanted more publicity? I boost. I want to save? I star. I want to read later (read: forget and feel guilty about)? I bookmark. I just like to wander around and read and talk to people and make them laugh. Y’know; be social, read media. @eestileib @maelstrom071 @sjolsen Boosting is how fedi works.. without it everyone wold have empty timelines. Like is a dopamine rush. It's good for the sender but not the same. Dont let people tell you what to do (except me right now 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣). I boost liberally. I just deleted lots of agreeable bleugh, because [text not deleted follows] Anyhoo, what do I know? Boost/⭐/reply, or not, as you will. 😎 @maelstrom071 @sjolsen to me boosting is simply "I would share this in a group chat with like-minded friends". The question is "would others be interested?". @sjolsen We are still working on an answer, but nyathing haz come up yet! :neocat_science: @sjolsen i mostly use the last one as "better check it's not a shitpost before liking" (have yet to actually open any of those ever again) @virtulis "looks like it could be funny or interesting if": "I knew some context" or "I look into it/read the article" (never to see my eyes again) and some stuff I don't "favourite" but I kinda like but I bookmark and idk I don't really know it just feels like I should bookmark it to maybe see again one day I do, too, sometimes, which is why I gave your comment a read receipt. Edit: but seriously, I’m afraid of my bookmarks by now. Some of those things I saved might well be the biggest shitposts that I’ll never verify. @sjolsen last button is "press this button to remember this post for later then immediately forget this post forever" @gsuberland @sjolsen I use it for bad takes, so they can show up in my search results* when I need to dig them up in order to Prove A Point @gsuberland @sjolsen actually that was the default behavior of my instance search field (until it broke), so I got used to pin information which may become useful later, and retrieve it this way. A very useful trick! @sjolsen the one on the right is "this is one of my own posts that I'm particularly proud of and might want to refer to later" Use it all the time! "This person wrote something I want to see/reply to later" (e.g., a song they want to hear or a question I didn't know the answer to at the time) @sjolsen@tech.lgbt the bookmark is obviously for posts you want to necroboost later @jamesbow Hm, but are you sure it always does that? Its shape is somewhat banner-like, so maybe it tries to lift or lower a banner in Arthurian Camelot first, and it only does the garage door thing if it fails - which it often does, but not always... leading to even more confusion for both the garage door owner and the independent observers. @sjolsen @sjolsen it's simple
The star is for liking a post, the boost button is for if you want your followers to see it, the bookmark is for bookmarking and the arrow is for using your Skibidi Rizz on Local Gyats This one's a new button... ' ⚡ Electrify* ' your post ? 🤨 ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ 💥 Actually this is just Thread Your Post button but... in keeping with the above theme for 💩.posts on a #ScienceSunday ⚡💩😂🔬 @sjolsen sent, liked and shitposted, I was about using the 4th button but now I'm scared The bookmark is like a time-capsule. I bookmark something, and I see it in 2 months when I remember bookmarks exist. @sjolsen My working hypothesis is that the red button on the right sends toots you'd like to come back to later to a place where you never go so they can be forgotten in a specific place @sjolsen@tech.lgbt that last one is "I'm gonna get back to this eventually, I swear " @sjolsen @chickenwing I didn't recognize the first one and thought it was quote boost. And i was like *anime voice* "So……… it has come to this" @sjolsen That last one kind of looks like a snake's tongue -- so maybe it's used to taste the air around a post? @sjolsen it's if you want to go back to something later. but nobody actually goes back to the something later, you just try searching for it to no avail instead! @sjolsen@tech.lgbt On misskey and its forks we have two shitpost buttons, "reply" and "reaction" :blobcatpop: It's the "I will reply to this post later when I have more time, but in reality will not get around to it, and eventually just remove it again in 80% of cases to avoid necro-posting" button. AKA the "I will show this amusing and/or interesting post to my partner/kids in person later, because forwarding posts to non-Mastodon users is inconsistent and kinda kludgy" button. @sjolsen for me that mysterious last button is "I should come back to this!" @sjolsen That button at right is "server, please don't delete this post even if it is more than 6 months old", to my opinion. @sjolsen The bookmark button is for stuff you want to send to people who are asleep Reminds me to review my many bookmarks. I wish they were sortable into lists. …I dare not look, it’s probably full with the articles I told myself I’d read but didn’t … @sjolsen Bookmark is to save posts for later. Like is for telling the poster that you saw/liked/appreciated their post. Boost is for showing interesting things to your followers. If you comment, there's probably no need to also like, but you might still want to boost. I'm very bad at following my own system, but I try. @sjolsen Bookmark a podcast, a paper, a meme I like, a recipe... @sjolsen KEIZOZKGBBSHFJEJAOFJEJDJHQLEJZHFKIFBDJFOGJZODLABDPFVDIALSLFKSOGJ @sjolsen I still have no idea what that bookmark thingy is supposed to be and what purpose it actually serves, is it meaningless? What does it even do? @sjolsen the bookmark button is for saving a post to boost in most hilarious moments. Or to save and later re-boost own posts that got lots of favs @sjolsen the leading theory on the mystery button is that it's related to some kind of ancient fertility ritual @sjolsen favourite is what I use when it's either something I figure most of my followers aren't interested in seeing or a way to say "nice image you have there, shame you didn't caption it, better luck remembering next time" @sjolsen @sjolsen the red one is for bookmarks. It saves the post for future reference. Not as useful on the fediverse, especially as it doesn't work like a "private like" like on Xitter, and there's way less drama here to pull them out for later. |
