okay fine i'll start some shit: windows metro had a tremendous amount of potential. it was just overambitious in the input method stuff. but the visual design principles? they nailed it. faithful to the international style, really strong type, i love the wayfinding signage metaphor. really really good stuff.

(alt text for all photos: just a bunch of examples of design systems plated in asymmetrical grids, the actual content doesn't matter)

@samhenrigold someone catalogued all the Apple bentos dating back to 2019 which I admire: figma.com/community/file/11508

I’m with you on Metro. Somehow, Microsoft always seems to have really cool things but then manages to fuck them up. Like resizable widget tiles on the start menu… which they then started injecting with more ads the longer Win10 went on.

@samhenrigold Yes! I tried out the then-new Windows Phone at SXSW many years ago (oh boy, I am an old person) and was super impressed by the way things looked and worked – lots of good ideas there.

@samhenrigold 😩 Thanks. My heart hurts again thinking about Live Tiles and the vertically‐scrolling Home Screen and the big Segoe type.

Oh! And the flips and animations!

Metro worked so, so well in Windows Phone 7. Windows 8, not so much, like Microsoft rushed and didn't think through what made Metro Metro.
