I'd love to hear something that you like about #Mastodon 4.3. It's been a long time in the works and I think our whole team could use some dopamine πŸ™‚

@Gargron

4.3 is much more efficient. I really appreciate the grouped notifications, the byline, a better graphic presentation, thanks

scy

@Gargron Grouped notifications are really cool.

COMPU73E ❄️

@Gargron the new notification filtering settings are absolutely fantastic, and perfectly timed so I could ignore the masses of Japanese spam mentions I've been getting all week

Peter Link πŸ‰πŸ‡¨πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ

@Gargron
I love the grouping of boost and favorite notifications. Looks so nice and clean compared to before. πŸ™‚

Roni Laukkarinen

@Gargron Definitely changes in notifications and filtering.

West Lawns

@Gargron it works smoothly. On the dark screen it looks nice.

OldManToast

@Gargron i don't think my server is on 4.3 yet, but when it does get upgraded, I'll definitely try it out for a week instead of Phanpy to see all the things that have been added

Cymaphore

@Gargron Upgrade worked fine, even with the very specific patches on orfodon.org

Popups with User informations look nice.

Notifications are much better now in my opinion

Sorting included Images is a very nice feature as well

Thanks!

Argenis

@Gargron Seems to be running solid so far, quick loading posts/media.

Anigma

@Gargron I like the new naming of Public and Public (silent) posts.

Marc Riese

@gargron I like the new "/" Hotkey for the search bar. :)

Mufasa

@Gargron

Seems the issue where editing a post would lose all the ALT text on the media is fixed in 4.3. 😎

saahbs

@Gargron 4.3 is noticeably snappier on firefox on android phone.

haikushane :d20:

@Gargron I loved how easy for migration was, for one thing!

Dentaku (Thomas Renger)

@Gargron It's only minor, but I really like that the Web Client can now automatically switch between light mode and dark mode.

Jon Henshaw :coywolf:

@Gargron

Easy...

- New icons are rad
- Grouped notifications are rad
- Updated color scheme is rad
- Hover cards for profiles is rad
- fediverse:creator is rad
- Clearer Blocking/Muting details is rad
- Everything keeps getting better is rad!

CharJTF :a11y: (she/her)

@Gargron I'm loving the updated alt button. It's so much easier to read them (when they exist) to see if I can boost them. And I really like the updated interface.

And the admin of the server I use updated the CSS so that images without an alt have a red border. (Maybe something for a future upgrade?)

bananabob :tinoflag:

@Gargron I was blown away by the new look interface on the web. Looks so up-to-date.

julian

@Gargron my instance hasn't migrated yet but every change I read sounds great and is cleverly implemented

Mme Zabet

@Gargron I really like the way the tags are put at the bottom and kind of highlighted! I also really like that you can indicate what language you're posting in!

mtp

@Gargron Things keep working. :-) We’re grateful for everything.

From one maintainer to another, keep it up. The integral of small incremental improvements amounts to a lot.

Ehrenreich Meuchel

@Gargron
Fine. We hardly noticed the upgrade process here. thanks to our formidable admins @ordnung et al. At first glance the notifications are much easier to handle now. Way better oversight where an answer is needed.

Astro

@Gargron This time no API that I use has been shut down.

David Prochnow

@Gargron I really like the byline feature that emphasizes the authors of certain articles. I hope other Mastodon clients will adapt this feature soon.

Dave Clark

@Gargron I know this is rather basic, but it looks and feels like a major platform now.

If you'd called 5.0 I would have believed you.

Ben Werdmuller

@Gargron the grouped notifications and revised compose block in particular are aces. Very clearly, though, a lot of work has gone into this across the board.

Mark Smith

@Gargron S3 retries has made Backblaze usable instead of constantly failing

Adam Gessaman :vcoffee:

@Gargron The UI feels significantly more responsive, and the bundled notifications are a wonderful usability upgrade. Thanks to all involved for the hard work!

Erik Uden πŸ‘

@Gargron the design is really awesome whilst staying true to the Mastodon vibe

Grouped notifications are a dream come true

Notifications filter are what's gonna destroy any future spam attack.

Just really good work overall!!

Anne Ominous

@Gargron i just want fewer nazis on this site and better tools for people subjected to racial hatred. that's it.

Felix Urbasik

@Gargron I love the new look, the grouped notifications are nice and the automatic system theme is a godsent!

John S Russell

@Gargron Grouped notifications _alone_ make it a superb update. Fantastic work, especially given how comparatively small the Mastodon developer team is.

ignis 😈

@Gargron new web ui looks fresh, splitting the streaming container was also a great idea

hybrid havoc

@Gargron it's a little thing but the direct link in the nav to Moderation is a pleasant sight. Also love the thread lines and how easy it was to customize their color.

mhoye

@Gargron clustered notifications are really great, as someone who periodically has a post grow legs and run, it makes the whole experience a lot better.

Gabriel Viso β˜•οΈπŸ‘Ύ

@Gargron Just upgraded (like, 30 seconds ago), and for now I love the fact that the UI switches from light to dark with the system, and that the compose text box is much more intuitive.

I will go through more options and features this week, of course.

christopher :rebel:

@Gargron

1. the somewhat simplified backend changes for increasing max post character count and max profile bio character count are both great

2. better illuminated alt text reminder on images is great

3. the backend security enhancements are awesome

4. the move away from ImageMagick is awesome

curious about the future of Redis

curios why i can't get nautical.social on your joinmastodon/servers page

cheers

Patrick "Trick" Morris :idic:

@Gargron I appreciate the tweaks to the post editor. If I want to do something more complicated than just bang out text and hit the send button, it's really clear how to do it.

Cecilia Mjausson Huster

@Gargron Grouped notifications! I love that my notifications are useful even after posting a Caturday photo! Big win! πŸ†

Bob πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²β™’πŸ§πŸͺ–

@Gargron

It feels like it is running more efficiently but it was a bitch to upgrade with all the sub programs needing to be upgraded...

Madame President

@Gargron
Mastodon is hands down the best platform going...
Thank you!
Myself and all my friends cancelled FB , Instagram and Threads yesterday... No more Meta.
You guys have made this platform a huge success and the world is aware of your talent.

Ness

@Gargron I'm not sure exactly what version it arrived in, but I like the recent change where multiple likes and boosts collapse in notifications– it's much easier to navigate. Thanks! :BlobhajHeart:

Kristin (vis.social Admin)

@Gargron I like that 'unlisted' is now called 'quiet public'.

Jerry Lerman

@Gargron
I really like that accounts on a server will be notified of severed relationships when the Admin suspends a server. There are some Admins, one in particular I know of, who blocks servers to bully the Admin and to be vindictive. I think it's a good thing that their members will be made aware of how much they are being limited.

I also like that any Admin action against an account results in a notification to the account. It will be more difficult now for an Admin to "shadow-ban" someone in secret.

At least this is my understanding of the change based on what I've read. I like these for it provides fairness and balance.

Marcus

@Gargron I'm on mastodon.social so I've seen a few of the new features as they were tested here. The notification grouping is really nice because it keeps me from being swamped by individual notifications. I also noticed the little popup for journalists who are on the fediverse a while back and it felt really nice to see Mastodon embracing credible journalists in this way.

Keep up the solid work. Mastodon is officially my only social media platform and I'm happy to watch it grow, πŸ™‚

Henry Wilkinson

@Gargron The UI refresh is another iteration of better, looks pretty great. I’m a huge fan of the fediverse meta tag, things that enable interoperability through open standards are always cool.

Justin Hall

@Gargron I love that Mastodon does everything I want it to do, and it is not controlled by a billionaire or massive social media company. Lol

David Chartier

@Gargron I really like the profile cards on mouse hover. Useful and pretty.

Hikory1

@Gargron Let more people to know that this platform exists and be even better than other social media.

Viss

@Gargron collapsed notifications! ocr text from pics for alt text! so good!

lachlan but spooky

@Gargron I'm on a few Mastodon servers as a user, and I haven't looked for or noticed any changes of features, yet.
But - I haven't noticed anything - software dev to software dev - is fantastic: it means you've released a major change which is stable and consistent enough that I haven't noticed it as a user. As a dev who hasn't always successfully done that, well done. It's a sign of the quality of your testing and review.

Juan C Nuno

@Gargron I don't think this is specific to 4.3 but I was thrilled I got threaded replies in the Android app. Thank you! mastodon.social/@juancnuno/113

mem_somerville

@Gargron thanks so much to the team--I noticed the bundling thing on a popular tweet before it was official and it was wonderful! Thanks so much everyone. Good call.

@Gargron My life has greatly improved with the new release. My posts seem more erudite, with concomitant profundity. My spouse actually spoke to me this morning. I've lost 18.4 kilograms, and my IQ increased 22 points (I'm now over 100!). Cats prefer my company and mosquitoes seem to bite other people. All thanks to the new and improved Mastodon! Kudos!

Trond Olsen

@Gargron Web interface is quite snazzy. The server upgrade was a breeze on my 1-man instance.

Brandon

@Gargron the article card author attribution is the best.

Rachel πŸ§›β€β™€οΈ

@Gargron

Love the notifications, filter notifications, and how easier it is to read the alt text. Love 4.3 so
much i made a donation!❀️
Keep up the great work! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ₯³

mapto

@Gargron I haven't experienced it yet on our instance, but having some onboarding (follow recommendations) was due and thank you for delivering. Best feedback would be improved user retention. Looking forward to it.

kurtus

@Gargron Mastodon mΓΆge lange und erfolgreich wirken. Ehre den EntwicklerInnen.

AmiW Streetart πŸƒ

@Gargron Unfortunately, there is not enough space in the field to describe everything πŸ˜‰ 😁 🫢🏻

Uckermark MacGyver :nonazi:

@Gargron it looks fresher in the UI, seems quicker and I assume consumes a little less resources due to the split containers. Also the upgrade process was easy and worked like a Charme. Patching for more character posts has also gotten much easier now.

Much appreciated πŸ™πŸ«Ά

Thib

@Gargron my personal favorite is the support of the simple yet very effective Fedi author tag.

I’m going to add it to the matrix.org website. I think it can be a good incentive for guests to help us write about Matrix and giving the rest of their work exposure.

One of the most social features of mastodon yet!

That Girl Over There

@Gargron That it's not a fucking nazi platform. I'm an autistic woman and I can actually speak my mind here-- and NOWHERE ELSE. I get censored on Instagram for telling the truth. I deleted my Twitter account when Elon bought it because fuck white supremacists.
Thanks for allowing me to speak and ponder out loud. The people here are mostly really decent, which is pretty great. 😁

Christian Bratsch

@Gargron
I looks more modern, but to me less efficient, less structured. Besides looks i dont realize any changes. Liked the older looks more, but all ok, not really relevant to me

HCJ

@Gargron I love the new interface on the web, well done to the team πŸ‘πŸ‘

Exxo

@Gargron It sounds small, but I really like that it just works!

There are too many Fediverse alternatives that are forks of another, discontinued software, and break over time or have any problems. They might be rich of features, but not of stability.

Athanasius

@Gargron The new "you boosted this" icon is great. Relying on only colour difference before was sub-optimal.

I finally seem to no longer have to pre-emptively set video playback volume to other than 100%, it's remembering what I last set! Yay!

Sascha Foerster :bonndigital:

@Gargron I loved the upgrading experience. It just works. 🫢

Dev

@Gargron I find the new icons for post visibility really cute!

doragasu

@Gargron My instance is still in 4.1, but I love you all anyway!

Michael T. Richter

@Gargron Is there a summary of the changes somewhere? From my perspective I haven't noticed much.

zakatak

@Gargron whatever it’s called where the author of an article is highlighted in a toot is really cool.

Greg Johnson

@Gargron Hate to be that guy, but for iOS, the personal profile page has column-inches of dead space due to the profile pic.

nosh :fosstodon: (Κ˜β€ΏΚ˜)

@Gargron

1. Poll Results button to filter polls under notifications is a highlight. I had to bookmark them before.

2. Group notifications is another one.

3. I like the new design especially now the text seems more readable.

4. Toot compose area also feels more friendly now.

grappling

@Gargron this is not specifically in regards to the new release, but I do appreciate all the hard work you and everyone involved with Mastodon puts in! I get value out of being on the fediverse and enjoy using it which I could not have said about my previous usage of certain social media.

jaz :twt: :wales_flag:

@Gargron among the many things 4.3 brings to the table, the redesigned emails are a great update, very polished, I'm really happy to see them.

Kudos to you and the team for getting 4.3 out, along with the care and attention paid to making it smooth and painless for the thousands and thousands of web sites using the software.πŸ‘

Francis Augusto πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄/πŸ‡§πŸ‡·/:bahia:

@Gargron It's snappier and nice. But it seems to me it consumes way more resources than before. I had to almost double my PG Bouncer clients...

Michael

@Gargron I know this is probably a bit off of what you were asking for, but I like your release notes on GitHub. They're will structured, with a couple single line notes about necessary admin actions up front, and then some in depth descriptions of the most interesting new features.

I also appreciated the detailed update instructions.

Mastodon's release notes genuinely stand out among the projects I'm running in my Homelab.

jonny (good kind)

@Gargron
It's been said many times in this thread, but grouped notifs and the notification gating settings are a humongous usability boost

uxcn

@Gargron I would need spare attention to respond appropriately.

Chad McCullough

@Gargron Honestly, the new look is great. I can really see all the hard work that was put into this update. Excellent work!
