Paralyzed Man Unable to Walk After Maker of His Powered Exoskeleton Tells Him It's Now Obsolete

"This is the dystopian nightmare that we've kind of entered in."

futurism.com/neoscope/paralyze

The right to repair is a human, ecological right. At so many levels, technology is building an environmental crushing, spirit crushing dystopia. All for the insatiable greed of a few tech bros.

Time to challenge the very concept of technological progress and innovation.

Would you prefer being criminalized, rounded up, and sent against your will to an invalids' home like Soviet "samovars" in the post war period?

RD

@bhcompy

lol, please don't embarrass yourself like that.

@RD4Anarchy
The economic system isn't the problem. Hell, the development of the technology was likely heavily funded by the government. The problem is the government (lack of regulation on one example and deliberately oppressive on the other).

But hey you can just throw pointless comments around

RD

@bhcompy

Capitalism is vastly more than an "economic system", and state and capitalism go hand in hand (the soviet union was no exception).

bhcompy

@RD4Anarchy
Of course the economy and the state go hand in hand. It's in the state interest to be deeply involved in the economy, which is why the solution isn't memeing about capitalism rather government reform

Thanks for saving the day, comrade. Everyone would have been lost without your insight.

@bhcompy

Did you read what I wrote?

I'll repeat it:

Capitalism is vastly more than an "economic system", and state and capitalism go hand in hand.

@RD4Anarchy
Did you read what I wrote?

I'll repeat it: the state and every economic system go hand in hand. Regulation is the answer, no matter what economic system is in play

RD

@bhcompy

So the economy based on chattel slavery could have continued if slavery had been more well-regulated? 🤔

bhcompy

@RD4Anarchy
It's almost as if we fought some kind of war over a disagreement on the topic

HeavenlyPossum

@RD4Anarchy @bhcompy@hachyderm.io

“Slavery just needed to be regulated better!”

HeavenlyPossum

@bhcompy @RD4Anarchy

Thank fucking god everyone has the permission of the pointless comments expert because we were all in a real pickle before

@bhcompy @RD4Anarchy

Literally your only two choices. This guy paralyzed for life because of a $20 battery or the gulag. I think it says that in the Bible somewhere.

Like the Japanese-American internment camps? Or native Americans' custody systems? I'm sure there are many other examples. The difference is there is no difference. Concentration of any power invites the worst people to grab it.

@gerrymcgovern

Underneath it all, this story tells us they think the man himself is obsolete

@gerrymcgovern I wonder how we avoided this issue with cochlear implants? They're similar in the sense of being devices that are manufactured privately, that people rely on, and in sure various manufacturers have gone under over the years, but I've never heard of someone being unable to get their cochlear implant fixed.

Might be a useful model to regulate the industry.

FinalOverdrive

@gerrymcgovern actually right to repair would be revolutionary.

SlightlyCyberpunk

@gerrymcgovern this stuff is so dystopian...couple years ago there were some people who lost their sight after the manufacturer of their optical implants went bankrupt too...like jesus, just basically taking out people's eyes and spines and shit because the manufacturer can't pay their bills...

@gerrymcgovern the makers must use the same PR team as the Labour Party, Disaster and Cringe

@gerrymcgovern "All for the _right_ to have the insatiable greed of a tech bro"

I fully believe one of the main reasons we continue to allow this self-destructive behaviour as a society is because we don't like the idea of denying ourselves the possibility to one day be in the same boat as the billionaires

@gerrymcgovern
At least it’s not one of Leon’s Neurolink brain chips. You need brain surgery to replace it (medical costs not covered under warranty) 😉

DELETED

@gerrymcgovern
Folks must be able to keep this device usable...

🦇Lyle Solla-Yates🦇

@gerrymcgovern "the issue was caused by a piece of wiring that had come loose from the battery that powered a wristwatch used to control the exoskeleton" 🤦

@gerrymcgovern

And this is why health technology should always be open source.

Shantell Powell

@gerrymcgovern one of my best friends had a few high tech implants for health issues. The companies disappeared and no one maintained her implants. She died. I don't know if it was because of this, but I'm sure it was a contributing factor.

Sam

@gerrymcgovern Oh great, a new episode of "Sorry, your life saving piece of tech isn't supported anymore" after this story I still remember well

futurism.com/neoscope/bionic-e

(Btw a few weeks ago i learned that ppl who "model" new 'innovative' prosthetics for cool tech presentations, often vets, dont get to keep them after the media show and somehow that wasnt surprising either)

Sam

Btw, you definitely wanna check out the article linked within that one, bcs it's truly dystopic, the way these people found out, that the company simply isn't supporting their EYES anymore.

Otte Homan - remember Geordie

@weirdmustard @gerrymcgovern ... I mean, if IEEE Spectrum has to do the investigation, things are *really bad* ...

U.Lancier

@gerrymcgovern the technical knowledge of any product to be sold in Europe (and other places with common markets) should be mandatorily given to a trusted authority prior to the first sell. Including any software.

As soon as the manufacturer is for whatever reason unable to service or replace with an equal product then that knowledge is to be released to the customers and to whoever might be able to provide service.

Reverse engineering of "abandonware" must be legal, no matter the technology.

moggie

Looks like the company did relent and fix it after a lot of people complained.

Bluebabbler

@gerrymcgovern Worse still, a company committed to making disabled people walk should have more ethical principles guiding its policies.
