francbelge, you can connect anything to the internet as long as you put a firewall in front of it, which you do anyway because your router acts as one

@grishka there are many threats to old windows xp that will find you, router or not 😄

francbelge, with a firewall you will have to actively do something that will get you exploited. With a public IP open to the internet though, yes. I saw a video of some guy connect a freshly installed XP VM to the internet with a public IP. It got infested with all sorts of nastiness in a matter of minutes.

@gsa @grishka As long as you're not using anything that opens ports to the public internet on your router, you'll be fine. I've left an XP VM running in a vulnerable state for a week (the initial release from 2001 with no updates installed, bridged to my main network) and nothing happened. Still shouldn't log into anything on it except maybe your Steam account, but XP has been so far discontinued that malware doesn't care for it any more / won't even run due to missing features.
