If this turns out to be true, that’ll probably be when I upgrade from my M1 Pro (2021). I’ve never had a MacBook last that long, so I’ll be curious to see if it can go for another two years. Mayyyybe a battery replacement at some point before then. 9to5mac.com/2024/09/11/oled-ma

With the Intel laptops, the speed difference was great enough that a four year cycle made a significant difference in my workflow. But the M1 is just so good, I don’t yet have the desire to upgrade for any reason. I don’t even think the M4 would make a dent in my workflow.

@samhenrigold I feel the same way. My M1 Max holds up so incredibly well that I’m not gonna think about upgrading for the next two or three years. It’s still such a beast!

@johjakob Plus, a huge amount of my work happens in a handful of Electron apps. Unless the M4 Pro includes dedicated hardware for managing multiple Chromium instances, idk how much it’ll improve my life.

@samhenrigold The thing I did notice going from M1 to M3 was anything that used the Neural Engine was significantly faster on M3

@samhenrigold Right before I graduated I had leftover scholarship $$ that was “use it or lose it” so I replaced my base M1 MBP for a baller config of the M3 MBP. I feel like I have a relatively demanding workflow but I really can’t tell the difference unless I *really* pay attention

@samhenrigold I have PowerBooks from the 90s which are still working just fine. The most I had to do was remove the clock battery on my Pismo.

@samhenrigold my (work) 2021 M1 Pro is still holding up great, haven't even noticed any battery issues so far. We're on a 4-year upgrade cycle here but this might tempt me to stretch mine one more year too

@leonoverweel I just need my battery to degrade by 3% by November 7 so I can get a free replacement, then I’m good to go. That's all I need.

@samhenrigold better start churning through some benchmark scripts out in the sun somewhere

Can we please finally have a decent 5K monitor? I don't need a new MacBook, my 2021 M1 Max still feels "new" and it's well possible I'll keep using it into 2030s.
