@oconnell yeah I basically refuse to "verify" myself on LinkedIn even though my legal name has been updated, just on principle

the idea that the government is the true source of truth for someone's identity is gross, I hate it, and should be rejected at every opportunity

I also use a different last name in general than my legal one so it wouldn't match anyway

I already paid way too much money to change my legal name once, so, I'm not doing it again. but that doesn't change what my name actually is, which is whatever I want it to be

@clarfonthey yea I've worked professionally under this name for over a decade now. We're far from alone and most workplaces don't actually give a damn, so this is really bizarre and offensive to me.

@oconnell honestly, it just feels like Microsoft wanting to have another contract on their belt with the carceral industry, since that's basically what background checks are

like the only reason anyone "cares" about linkedin verification is because for some bizarre reason people still care about linkedin in general and microsoft can do whatever they want to force people on linkedin to do things

@clarfonthey I totally agree, although tbh I wouldn't cry if my colleagues took the infamous "journalist watercooler" off of X in favor of LinkedIn, the bar is in hell but it would be a a step up
