my another boomer ui take is that app icons should have unique shapes to remain distinctive and recognizeable

mac os app grid, showing a bunch of icons in a rounded rectangle shape
android home screen with a bunch of icons in a circle shape. a lot of them are just actual icons (i.e. google play triangle, or google docs paper) but in a white circle.
a bunch of GNOME app icons in various shapes, mimicking real life objects

@jannuary@tech.lgbt I loved the days of Android 5, when the icons were all original and pretty. I dunno why they switched to having all the icons the same.

@jannuary you have no idea how much I appreciate this post. That's literally the only reason I prefer Android 6 and below

@jannuary@tech.lgbt GNOME icons have a good mix of stylization and skeuomorphism, i love the distinctive nature of them while still going together well

@jannuary@tech.lgbt sometimes boomers are right. all generations can come together for better future

@jannuary I don't think that's a boomer take at all -- I've missed distinctive app shapes for years. It's an accessibility issue for me.

@jannuary i have visual processing issues and problems with grids and the move to making everything square or circular has seriously fucked me up much further

Mystery Babylon

@forestine @jannuary I remember when the whole "flat" UX thing got rolling. Didn't have the words for it then, but the philosophy behind it always felt a bit fashy.

@forestine @jannuary and I guess distinct shapes with clear contrast and colours makes it easier to at a glance pick what you're looking for...

@kkarhan @jannuary yes exactly. takes me eons to find the icon i need. it's embarrassing if someone is trying to help me with something.

@forestine @jannuary I think it's important to also account for that as a means of accessibility and more of that should be mandatory per law instead of letting corporations decide.

On Android I do know a #launcher for #eInk screens called RelaunchX that may alleviate the issue a bit...

When **Flat UI** came out, I remember thinking, "I paid three thousand bucks for something that I could make in PowerPoint?!?"

Bring Back Skeuomorphism! 🤓

@jannuary i hate all of my system tray icons because theyre all circles with slightly different sizes and i keep accidentally clicking on either signal or quod libet trying to access the other . so i might just make an icon theme about it if it annoys me enough

system tray with quod libet, keepass, nheko, and signal which look really similar if you dont look hard enough
