I once ran my own personal URL shortener but eventually killed it because it wasn't that useful, but I kept the links working, and in fact they still work _to this day_ because I converted them from a dynamic PHP web application to a little list of nginx URL redirects.

Google have comparatively infinite budget and can't figure out how to be a respectful web citizen.

@ticky my IRC logger has existed for longer than dozens if not hundreds of Google products

A single Raspberry with an old SD and a crappy USB adapter can last longer than some of those.

@ticky Exactly. They've lost their entire sense of direction.

@ticky "just a little list of nginx redirects" is a surprisingly powerful tool. That's how I do pkn.me/:id => petekeen.net/:slug (among other things).

@ticky In this case they probably don’t care. In other cases they go against being one for their own benefit, or just because they can.

@ticky url shorteners are like holding steel beams together with jello. we know how they dont work. people should never use them, and they do, and this happens. fuck google to be sure, but what did people think would happen? google kills everything- eventually it will kill search and email.

@ticky

Don't shorten links.
Links were not meant to be shortened.
They have played us for absolute fools.
