@richpuchalsky They say "predict" and "forecast" but I am pretty sure they mean "determine".

You know, just like the zipcode, but even more obscure.

Epistatacadam

@chrisg @richpuchalsky I suspect a Zip code has higher predictive value than any DNA test ever will.

@epistatacadam
Yeah...
I was reading an article earlier about the dumbest states but they didn't mention Louisiana 🤣

@richpuchalsky My credit score says I'm above average for my area. Just saying. 720 and killing it, literally I cant afford to eat something must die.

@richpuchalsky my odds of getting a phd are 100%. My friend Matt’s odds are 0%. Why am I paying $50 again? This sounds more like an idiot tax.

Cykonot

@richpuchalsky are you implying social opportunity is heritable? Next you'll tell me WEALTH is heritable, and using a definition of a word from one field – say, genetics – in another (oh idk socioeconomics) is extreme dunning-krugerism

wallabra 🇧🇷

@richpuchalsky One can argue that two methods of social selection are worse than only one. But it is true that the social effect of DNA testing is, at least in the novelty of their selectivist nature, fairly exaggerated.

For the couple of people who didn't get it: this is not some kind of approval of eugenics or suggestion that the $50 DNA test can actually predict anything. It's saying that zip codes (in the US) are a good indicator of your parents' wealth and social class, the primary predictor of these kinds of outcomes.

cognitively accessible math

@richpuchalsky Right! It's stating that no, genetics don't predict that stuff.

Mr. Bruno :verified:

@richpuchalsky I would bet on the zip code! Put them to the test!

Nadia Al-Belushi, MD 🔭🌌🪐

@richpuchalsky Dangerous attempt by MIT to imply genetic determinism. I guess they're looking for a new audience for financial reasons, and know where the bread is buttered.

@nadiaalbelushi @richpuchalsky
Maybe they're mapping genomes across zip codes

Kilroy_Was_Here

@richpuchalsky

Such a test is also a eugenicist's wet dream. Blech.

patcanfield

@richpuchalsky Propensity is a relative term in this suggestion.

Coyoty

@patcanfield @richpuchalsky Relatives have propensities. Especially Uncle Fred.

@richpuchalsky i feel like skintone would be an even easier approximation

@manas

Zip code is a convenient proxy for (perceived) race *and* class.

Rachel Rawlings

@richpuchalsky Before zip codes were invented in 1963, a paper bag was used.

Reboot Robotnik

@richpuchalsky I haven't seen a slick burn like this since BP torched the Gulf

fsniper

@richpuchalsky letting aside the sick burn.l, they haven't seen #Gattaca? That would never end well.

@richpuchalsky farcical eugenics. No different from white intellectual supremacy lol. I thought we got passed this.

Andrew

@richpuchalsky "selective preschool" really gives it away. what could they possibly be selecting based upon that isnt just discrimination, have the toddler take the SAT?
