1/3 New "solution" from the @eu2024be on #ChatControl fails #HumanRights on all counts!

We're looking at:
🔸Forced consent
🔸Mass scanning of private messages
🔸Undermining encryption
🔸Punishing privacy-enhancing services & rewarding those that violate people’s privacy

Be scanned – or get banned! CONSENT to data processing, under EU law, needs to be given FREELY!

2/3 The new #ChatControl proposal suggests that providers of private communications services must:

👀 ask people to consent to faulty AI-based scanning of their private chats, OR
❌BAN them from sharing images, videos & URLs!

Client-side scanning will UNDERMINE private communications and leave people VULNERABLE to malicious attacks.

3/3 🚨 There is NO magical solution to child sexual abuse.

The mass scanning of people's private chats leaves people VULNERABLE to malicious security attacks.

We need multi-faceted societal-level and political solutions. Alternative approaches exist: edri.org/wp-content/uploads/20

Where are the basic on the ground investigations on the people that do those things, using infiltration and police practice? Wait a minute, these are more expensive, right?

@edri In others words, they force you to consent. It is almost funny they would still allow you to upload text 🥴

@helma @edri
Yeah it's odd text is exempt from the forced agreement to mass surveillance, they must have thought children only can be exploited or harmed with shared images, videos and links to potentially harmful stuff on the internet. 🙄 🙃

@edri @jens Literally every despotic law in a democracy has begun as "we must protect the children!"

Perhaps a new approach is needed if children are still at risk after decades of "won't someone think of the children!?" policy-making.

@edri
'Consent' always reminds me of the video 'It's simple as tea'.

It's a different context, but it gets to the heart of the matter.
