TUXEDO on ARM is coming 🔧

As you may have gathered from the relevant press over the last few days, we at TUXEDO are working on an ARM notebook with a Snapdragon X Elite SoC from Qualcomm.

@tuxedocomputers @karlnepomuk Hm, honestly in that case there's only a limited plus for me, I don't care which ISA my system is running on. And if it's just another beefy laptop with a fan but now running ARM instead of x86, the upsides are much more limited.

I hope there'll be other vendors who'll build something of a MacBook Air alternative, maybe @system76 or @frameworkcomputer, idk?

@tuxedocomputers @karlnepomuk

all we want is *less* powerful, less overheating, less fan noise, more battery life :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

@tuxedocomputers This is awesome! Is there any chance to get the hands on that device on any conferences where you're an exhibitor? Thrilled to see what it's like.

TUXEDO

@stdevel
hands on: currently we don't have plans, because it's not ready yet, but when we have something, yes. 👍

Christian Stankowic

@tuxedocomputers Great! We can also speak about this on our #FocusOnLinux #Podcast if you want to: focusonlinux.podigee.io/

Would love to report on your progress.

@tuxedocomputers

Is it going to run Linux or Qualcomm's modification of Linux?

TUXEDO

@didek
qualcomm brings the drivers upstream into the kernel, so any arm distribution based on a current kernel will run. we are currently leaning towards debian arm64 (which also uses rasperry pi os, for example)

Dawid Rejowski

@tuxedocomputers

Quite unusual for Qualcomm. Good to know.

@tuxedocomputers Fantastic news!
What are the chances of it running something GNOME-based? E.g. Fedora or elementary?
A hands-on video on a later-stage prototype e.g. by @thelinuxEXP would be really good content :)

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

@tuxedocomputers @volfpeter And, of course, I’d love to be able to preview the device :)

Holarse - Spielen unter Linux

@tuxedocomputers this is fantastic news! We even have a small but expendable Section about gaming on arm based Linux here: holarse.de/category/freie_stic

We would love to check this out when this machine gets available!

Martin Rocket

@tuxedocomputers Does anyone remember the Toshiba AC100? That was awesome.

kontrollierterWahnwitz

@tuxedocomputers Good! There is definitely a lack of ARM hardware that runs Linux. I hope you also consider a Tablet / Convertible that runs Linux.

TUXEDO

@kontrollierterWahnwitz
Tablet rather not - but the subject of convertibles is at the top of our list - a little patience please!

nebucatnetzer

@tuxedocomputers This has the potential to be my next computer.
I’m a bit worried about the support however.
In the phone world usually Qualcomm is the main problem when it comes to long term support.
My backup notebook is over ten tears old at this point but still works good enough if my main machine would die.

@tuxedocomputers Nice! Do you have any estimates about the expected battery life yet? Will this be available as a 14" or (even better) 13" device?

TUXEDO

@fnord
We are currently planning 14 inches and we can't say anything about the battery life yet.

Pratham Patel :ferrisdance:

@tuxedocomputers @fnord one tiny request: if possible don’t make the chassis thinner; if you have extra space, I’d rather have a 2/3/4 day battery life instead ;)

Pratham Patel :ferrisdance:

@tuxedocomputers @fnord another request: please have a 64GB SKU if the laptop will have soldered memory; if LPCAMM2 is used, I don’t mind a single memory configuration ;)

Tarcísio Surdi

@thefossguy @tuxedocomputers @fnord It’s an SOC, so the memory will definitely be packaged alongside it. Upgradability is one of the main drawbacks in the context of ARM based computers, but I’m all for it due to the crazy efficiency.

Fnord Prefect

@tuxedocomputers Thank you, looking forward to learning more details as development progresses! 🙂👍

@tuxedocomputers wow great news! Is there somewhere a vague chart where all computers are compared with their performance. To be honest I lost completely the overview about how this is comparable to intel i3/5/7/9/11/pi6 AMD Ryzen8628462abc or Apple M23456PeaX .

I know this is difficult, but a really very vague chart would help immense to get a tiny clue what "performance compared to" means. For example I don't have a clue what performance a M2 Apple computer has, so naming it, doesn't help me in any way to be able to sort that in an better or worse category.

To give an example: The sentence "The SoC is not suitable for high-end notebooks or gaming behemoths" helped me a little to get an idea in which ballpark this performance will be.

Thanks in advance.

@tuxedocomputers Sounds great but I find it frustrating that the trend seems to be for smaller sizes. As someone with vision issues I need a minimum of 15".

DELETED

@tuxedocomputers Nice to see high-end ARM laptops designed for Linux!! 🚀 I was already wondering when the Snapdragon X chips would start to trickle down to Linux OEMs!

Stevez

@tuxedocomputers With "Adreno GPU" -> so only OpenGL ES will be supported? (meaning half of the gpu-related software will not work? As similar to Rpi?).

Will we have full Vulkan API support?

Will there be full support for NPU available?

Lots of questions...😅

TUXEDO

@theron29
All the details about driver- support etc. you can check the official announcement of Qualcomm and the linked further details leading to Linaro:

ralen

@theron29 @tuxedocomputers people will make something to get vulkan working, im sure

Joshua Strobl :verified:

@tuxedocomputers Ooooh I'd love to pick myself up one of these at some point to do ARM enabling for #Fedora #Budgie Spin!

Matúš :ferris: :nixos:

@tuxedocomputers Will I be able to change OS if I don't want to use yours?

FSMaxB

@tuxedocomputers Is this still by Clevo or did you design your own laptop?

aritrasaha

@tuxedocomputers there's no proper ai implementation into the linux kernel or Linux desktop itself so how can i use the npu in snapdragon cpu.will tuxedo implement something ai like ollama or like so.

CuriousApe2020

@tuxedocomputers
Will it have USB 4 and the option to use an external GPU?

Semmelstulle

@tuxedocomputers if @ONLYOFFICE is shipping an ARM Flatpak in the future, Apple Silicon might be a thing of the past for me!

Kelly Schultz

@tuxedocomputers great to hear. This means more testing and updates for Linux on arm right?
