Google has started the 'Manifest V2 phase-out', which to put it in simple user-friendly words:

Google is phasing out features that make current adblockers work. uBlock Origin will not be able to block ads as effectively as before.

blog.chromium.org/2024/05/mani

Now, how to solve this? Well, there's one answer. Move to Firefox:
mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

Firefox on Android is great as well, and supports adblockers as well!

@thomastospace I would say Firefox and Firefox Focus works well on ios as well!

@thomastospace The funniest thing is that there's nothing inherent about Manifest V3 that does the adblock blocking - Mozilla is implementing it too but is keeping the parts that Google is removing from their version, so Mozilla will be the better spot when it comes to truly effective adblock.

@thomastospace I've been using a pihole for several years now, it blocks the adverts at DNS level, works for all devices on your network, any browser, any platform

ThomasToSpace

@davespice My main reason for not doing that is not wanting to become the it department of the house. 😅

David Honess

@thomastospace ah I can vouch for it's reliability, you set it up and leave it, once it's going you can forget about it, once in a while some websites are blocked that you want to access but it's easy to solve that, it has a http page you can access with a professional looking interface

ThomasToSpace

@davespice Yeah. That 'access this page' part is something I'm happy to do, but I'm not explaining that to others in the household.

For them, things will go from 'it works' to 'now it doesnt'.

Still love pihole though.

@thomastospace it hardly happens in our house, and if you have kids it also protects against a whole bunch of different types of digital surveillance

silhouette

@thomastospace Or move to LibreWolf which comes with Ublock Origin by default and no telemetry.

ThomasToSpace

@silhouette There's many browsers, but most Chrome users are likely to prefer well-known names.

Moving them to Firefox is the best option to get people to move to a browser that doesn't want to destroy the web.

@thomastospace Mozilla isn't free of the Manifest v3, and in fact, it already confirm it's going to be into Firefox eventually.

It's what happens when most of the income comes from Google.
ThomasToSpace

@PepperTheVixen I've done it myself a few years ago. The migration is really smooth luckily!

@thomastospace As it should be. If you don't want ads, pay for Youtube premium. THat simple.

@thomastospace prime time to switch to Firefox or one of it's numerous derivatives

Luciano :mario:

@thomastospace@phpc.social I use Vivaldi right now, but if things go south I'm switching to Firefox ASAP
Which I still haven't gotten rid from my phone funny enough

@thomastospace I did wish there were alternatives to Mozilla (that didn't suck), who seem more than happy to throw money at dumb things (businesses that don't exist, their executives and political speakers who have nothing to do with tech or the web) and being completely reliant on Google for their continued existence.

Oh and their recent privacy problems.

Martin Be

@thomastospace Well.. Except for Firefox people doesn't have very much different alternative choice to move to. Especially on the mobile platforms. I mean in the term of what the most browsers are based on. There are only few available web engines out there. Three if I am not wrong. Sadly we don't have anything else. That's very bad situation for us all.

ThomasToSpace

@helma There are many, but giving one clear choice makes a user more likely to move.

Try to visit that website from a non-tech perspective. It's just a lot of data you wouldn't understand.

Helma 🤗

@thomastospace It is only a matter of what you want or need. This overview is clearly not intended for my 80 year old relatives. Also, it does not need to be. It is just an overview without aspirations of being perfect for everyone and I appreciate it and a lot of people from my community will also.
