As always, domestic abuse is _the_ flagship infosec threat model, the one where the victim has the least resources, the least recourse, where they're closest to immediate physical harm.

That this industry has failed at and mostly abandoned the idea of even pretending to try dealing with a threat model that's difficult and unprofitable and mostly hurts women is not news, but this new Windows Recall feature is next-level professional negligence.

@mhoye I got called an "AI hater" for pointing out exactly that (and the potential abuse by law enforcement) in mastodon.schub.social/@denschu and ... in a chat-thingie.

I love working in tech. :this_is_fine:

(but, to be fair to them, "AI hater" *is* correct.)

@denschub There is _a lot_ of practical overlap between the domestic abuse and law enforcement threat models, in no small part because of how much overlap there is between domestic abusers and law enforcement officers as groups, and it's as shameful as it is grotesque how much the tech industry caters to both.

@mhoye I'm actively ashamed to be working in the tech industry. :)

@mhoye change the xkcd cartoon from govt agents beating someone with a wrench to an abusive husband beating someone with a wrench, and maybe these sheltered nerds will believe it.

xkcd.com/538/

Panel 1:
(A crypto nerd's imagination)
A: this laptop's encrypted. Let's build a million-dollar cluster to crack it.
B: no good! It's 4096-bit RSA!
A: blast! Our evil plan is filled!

Panel 2:
(What would actually happen)
A: His laptop's encrypted. Drug him and hit him with this $5 wrench until he tells us the password.
B: got it.

@heathborders

There's a missing third panel to that called "what happens all the time", that says "I'm going to hit her with a wrench for no reason and then look through her computer because I can."

The guy opposite him is wearing a police officer's hat and says "That's fine."

merzbow and chill

@heathborders @mhoye

how many of these sheltered nerds see themselves as the ones wielding the wrench in that scenario though

(genuine question; the tech sphere is one of the worst enablers of modern misogyny, I'd be 0% surprised if it translated to higher rates of DV among tech workers)

Heath Borders

@emptyfortress @mhoye

> One of the worst enablers of modern misogyny

Can you expand on that?

In my reading, cops have the worst DV correlation

mhoye

@heathborders @emptyfortress If "enablers" means "providing free tech support for" I definitely believe this.

@heathborders @mhoye

If those sheltered nerds actually read xkcd regularly they likely wouldn't be defending the kind of shit they are though. Randall is the exact antithesis to the tech bro culture.
