Have you ever considered..

A reel to reel device with a reel of 100nF caps loaded instead of magnetic tape. The device is black and says Akai, it sits on a wooden floor

@janamarie ever since I noticed that SMD reels often seem to be the same as tape reels :D

@cato @janamarie smart card micromodules were made to reuse 35mm film stuff at Bull factories in the 1980s.

A roll of flex PCB, with printed patterns of smart card micromodules. On the side of the pcb carrier, we can see sprocket holes similar to a 35mm film.

@janamarie nah, I never had the capacity and there was always to much resistance 😋

@dec_hl @janamarie These 100n were worth a fortune like some years ago 🙈

@janamarie Please do that with some reel of BS components in a way that'll rip the tape off and film it in slow motion 😹 😁

Jana

@manawyrm do it with ferrite beets, it’s basically magnetic tape..

@janamarie 😹 ...

hmm....

Now I wonder what the weirdest thing you could feed and still record some sort of recognizable audio is.

@manawyrm @janamarie take the magnet strips from public parking liftgates and glue them together, forming a strip.

adorfer

@manawyrm @janamarie P.S. do not drive up with cargo bikes to those lift gates. they may hand you paper cards automatically without even pressing a button... and may even repeat the process, if you accidentally move the bike in the "wrong" pattern.

@rc2014 @janamarie why have a Game Boy Color when you can have this?

@janamarie my brain generates a flapflapflapflap sound

@janamarie Hmpf... 100nF they are everywhere these days, since they sold out a couple of years ago. Their earlier albums were much better.

@janamarie after adam savages videos about the old sony reel to reel ones - the super cool looking stainless steel ones - yes :D

Ænðr E. Feldstraw

@janamarie Yes! My dad had one, both for recording and playing music and… computer software and data.

Andrew

@janamarie I guess I shouldn’t be surprised they use the same spindle

Anatol

@janamarie what a strange filament management system

New industrial music genre unlocked

@janamarie Is that this "Chiptunes" thing that all the cool kids talk about?

C3Casi

@janamarie the direction of the left reel is wrong🧐

Marvin

@janamarie I would love to see this with some LED strips. But ho to get them powered...?

Daughter of Rao

@th @janamarie imagine, that instead of the needle the head would actually have a laser which can read that disk...

@daughterofrao @th @janamarie

Wasn't there a laser based vinyl turntable at some point?

Ah yes, here it is: yewtu.be/watch?v=W_4sooWCh_Y
