a) optional and b) transparent (meaning explicitly customizable/trainable by me, so it's clear what it's doing)

@drq the question is, is an algorithm the right solution and to which problem(s) exactly.
I agree with you that an algorithm isn't necessarily bad, but I'm in doubt on whether it provides what we're (as humans) looking for.
