About an hour ago, the sky turned blood red over Bavaria, Germany. It's the first time I've ever seen an #Aurora in my life. It was so bright to be easily visible with the naked eye. An absolutely jawdropping experience. πŸ––πŸ˜³βœ¨

polarlights appearing just after sunset, 22:16 Berlin time; 10s exposure
at 22:29 they got a lot brighter, covering half if the sky; even some green visible at the bottom; another 10s exposure
vertical 10s exposure at 22:37
before fading again, they moved westward in front of the moon, here an 10s exposure at 22:46 showing distinct lines shaped by the magnetic field

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on ? I’ve seen the Northern Lights numerous times in northern BC- always with the naked eye.

@SonofaGeorge @ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on Rare in Europe. Things aren’t so spectacular in southern England tonight but the phone picked things up quite nicely. And since it’s been years since I saw one of these in Iceland, it was nice to finally get that experience in the UK!

@SonofaGeorge @ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on our magnetic field isn't symmetrical, so it comes lower in North America day-to-day, if I'm not misremembering things.

@ProjectPhysX I wish I could say the same haha, too much light pollution here currently haha

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on first time to ever see it here in Ireland, the whole sky had a spectacular sheeting effect (potato phone camera, forgive my sins :))

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on I misread this and thought it said "skies turned blood red over Barovia" and thought "Yeah that tracks."

Linda

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on it’s right over Europe tonight - there was a solar storm. I saw in Scotland too

@tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on obligatory evidence photo that I really took these #aurora pictures^^ πŸ––πŸ§ This has got to be my best selfie of all time! ✨

@tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on 2 hours later, May 11 00:39-00:54, round 2. The #aurora now covers the entire sky over Bavaria, Germany. It's even visible to the naked eye when looking south! This is insanity!! πŸ––πŸ˜³
First image even looks like the camera Sensor of my phone got hit with radiation particles.
#polarlights #northernlights #Bavaria #Germany

10s exposure at 00:39 looking north; on the left, some particles are visible
10s exposure at 00:45, streamers dancing rapidly
10s exposure at 00:48
10s exposure at 00:54 looking east, the aurora covered the entire night sky over Bavaria

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on Amazing. The sun isn't down yet here in Victoria, B.C. in Canada. If this is what we might see, I'll definitely have to stay up tonight.

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on aurora borealis, with colors. Here in Rovaniemi seen quite frequently, but only in green color. With color rare also in here. Moritz you was lucky your first. πŸ€“

brot

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on yeah, it was amazing to see the lights with the bare eye down here in bavaria. I never would have imagined that it would be possible to get more than a faint green glow here. And yet, here we are... All the colors visible :)

Northern lights with green and red/violet colors. Trees at the bottom of the picture

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on The sun is having a party and we're all invited. Should be active for a year or so

Not the right weekend to have an on-call shift for tech support :grimace:

draeath

@bjb @ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on no kidding, I just went on call today myself.

All quiet though, not even a twitch from our datacenter power systems so far.

I hope it's quiet for you as well!

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on Just now in Northern Spain #picosdeeuropa . Couldn’t believe it… even a very weak glow visible with the naked eye. This is taken with my iPhone. #aurora

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on This is one of the coolest things I've come upon here on Mastodon...ever! Super jealous though...haha.

@ProjectPhysX @tagesschau @DLR @dlr_next @stim3on Experiencing Divine Envy, that feeling when you want to have what someone else has, but not at the expense of taking it away from someone. As Tom Waits might say: All upon a cloudy night

oldfartjmb says eh?

@ProjectPhysX

THANK YOU DOC!!! Not something we ever see in the southern part of the US. This is a real treat for me/us.
