You do not need to root a phone to install 3rd party apps. Just grab the #fdroid app and use the fdroid app store.
@Billie ugh you're talking to an Android developer, I know that, right? I want to remove some annoyances from system UI that annoyed me for way too long. That's not doable with just apps.
